Any Dove hunters?

Yesterday I had a great day. I tried, although unsuccessfully, to position myself under a flying dove. Since I spent most of my hunting time in Mn before they had a dove season I really haven't figured these critters out yet. I found what I thought was a pretty good bunch of them feeding on weed seeds and sitting on power wires. For an hour or so in the afternoon I sat by a pond with a muddy edge and watched them flying from the wire to the feed...no luck. Then I sat for awhile by a small grove of cedars that looked like a place where I'd roost if I where a dove. Again they just sat on the wire on the road. I stayed until the big red ball of the sun was mostly below the horizon and they still sat on the wires. It was warm, with calm wind and a very pleasant evening but even so shouldn't they have gone to roost before sundown?
In any event I had a great day afield. What's that saying about the worst day hunting is better than the best day doing anything else. That's what I felt like last night, successful or not.

Where did I go wrong? Any tips would be appreciated.

I went this last weekend in Lyman and Tripp counties. I didn't last long when the wind wasn't blowing the mosquitos were taking more of my blood than I drew of the doves I had a honest shot at. It was fun and a few morsels were obtained but really it boils down it should be considered a diet hunt. Go back and forth across the fields trying to intercept their flight pattern, sweat profusely give up a galllon of blood to the mosquitos and obtain enough meat to hold in the palm ot your hand. Better than nutrisystem is what I told my wife when I got home. I think she will let me go again after she saw the new trimmer me.
