Another great ruffie year in NW Wyoming

It was another great year hunting ruffed grouse in NW Wyoming and western Idaho. I’m always amazed how good it can be. I went three times for 3 days each time and I was never disappointed. On two trips I never even saw anyone else. Gotta be careful of grizzlies but it is beautiful country. Bird numbers seemed about the same as last year. Already looking forward to next year!!

Good for you man, can’t imagine chasing birds and dodging grizzlies.. puts my rattlesnake issue in perspective!
Yeah, Rattlers can kill you, but they can't eat you. I've never seen either but the grizzly's give me the heebi geebies!

Do you carry a sidearm? Not sure my 410 would deter a Griz

I focused on other birds this year for my guys first season. This fall I'll be looking for ruffies and blues, super nervous on my pups range in near country. Maybe it'll change once we get into the different terrain, and I also need to get a tracking collar.

Glad you had a good year!

I only carry my shotgun. But I keep the bear spray at the ready. We are also making a fair amount of noise so that helps. No need to be quiet when hunting ruff grouse.

I just finished a great year. Awesome ruffed grouse hunts, 3 amazing weeks in South Dakota, 7 total days in Nebraska (okay hunting), a few day hunts (not as great hunting but good exercise for me and dog) in Utah, and then finished out the season with 6 days in Kansas chasing bobwhites and pheasants. Normally I spend a couple weeks in January down in Arizona chasing gambles, scailies, and mearns quail, but it has been so dry for several years that it is hardly worth the drive—SW Kansas was a better option and I saw a lot more quail!! I debated hunting woodcock in Louisiana but it was raining and cold when I drove through on my way to winter quarters in Florida so I chickened out. Hopefully everyone has a great end to their season!!
