Five of us in three vehicles headed out to a roadless area of BLM land in northwestern AZ east of Mesquite to hunt desert quail. It was a banner season due to unseasonable rains. Two fellows were in a big new posh Hummer, one in a Camel Trophy Edition Land Rover, and my buddy and I were in my high mileage, down market Explorer. At about 8:30 along the way the Hummer boys got in an excited state and had to pull over to shoot off some rounds with an assault rifle and replenish their breakfast beers. A little farther down the trail we came across a long puddle in the tracks. I was handed a video camera and asked to film the Hummer blasting through the puddle. Later the Rover and the Explorer got ahead of the Hummer by a few minutes and we pulled over in a wash to wait. A big mud puddle was nearby. As the Hummer approached, the big mud puddle was apparently too great a temptation. The driver hit the gas, hit the puddle, squished to an abrupt stop, and sank to the floor pans. I was the only one with a shovel. We tried rock ramps, a tow strap (it abruptly snapped, and finally we had to abandon the Hummer. It took over an hour to get back to an actual road. I was told later that two tow trucks were needed to winch out the big Hummer.
