Hey all. Who here has some input regarding the 870 Special Field? Might have a chance to pick one up and wanted to get some perspective. Thanks!

Special Field

12 OR 20? I have shot a 12 some, with short barrel they are good ruffed grouse guns, but I would shy away from them as a pheasant gun. They can be a little whippy with the short barrel and they are loud. Don't hunt too close to another hunter say in a duck blind you will ring their bell. Shooting 3" shells through them is like getting hit with a sledge hammer. Good guns for youths and women as they are not to long and you can get a shorter stock. Easy to carry is another plus. Good luck.http://www.ultimatepheasanthunting.com/forum/images/smilies/cheers.gif

Wouldn't be my choice for an open country gun but if I had the chance to get one at a decent price I might buy it for woods hunting.

Hunted with a 870 SF for a couple of years and loved it. Hunt with a 1187 SF now. It points well for me. Granted the shotgun purest dislike them for there short barrels and english stock on a non-double trigger gun but it works for me.

You like what you like.

I shoot my 28 inch barreled wingmaster better than my 23 inch barreled turkey model on long crossing clays,or game. Not killing a 45 yard crossing bird flying low and fast might mean going home empty handed around here.

I still want a special field though for grouse and woodcock.

At the core, they are not very forgiving of scattergunning mistakes.
But they will go boom and often little more is required.

i love them my brother has had 1 for as long as i can remember & i have often picked it up & shot geese ducks grouse & even turkey its short & shoulders well & fast & with a improved throws a hell of a wide pattern...

1 thing it dose act up on him every once in awhile when he pumps the gun really slow??? maybe he just needs to clean his damn gun??? lol his is now painted camo for turkey & waterfowl but overall i would say i would get the SF 870

i have a 870 magnum express with the 26 in barrel & its a overall great gun & dose everything for me but i also use a old ithaca model 37 that fits me better but i could just as simple just use the 870 SF they are nice guns!!!

i wish i could get my hands on a 11-87 SF im going to start looking but they are also fine guns & bird killers for sure!!!

get the 870 SF there fine guns

Do you like fast pointing and swinging guns? If you do go for it. The sighting plane on that 870 is about the same as a double with 28" barrels, so as i see it sighting plane is a non issue. It really comes down to how it feels to YOU when you mount and swing the gun. When I buy a gun I am most concerned that my eye comes up in the perfect spot when I mount the gun quickly, if it does I know I will hit what I'm shooting at because I don't have to "aim" the gun, it does that part for me.
