Headed back up to Sedgwick County this morning, got two ... apparently 2 birds is my limit. Shot the first two within the first 40 min. Didn't take a shot on one bird - it was in line with a truck that had stopped at the cross roads - other hunters who stopped to watch. The truck was out of bird killing range, but I do my best to be safe. When it flushed in line with their truck, I wanted to shoot them. ;) Shot a 3rd pheasant later in the day - I hit it, it went down, skidded and tumbled on the ground, then took off running. Dakota went to retrieve where it went down, then we spent the next 20 min trying to find it and never did. It was a good day.

Great pictures! Seeing your Wiemer reminds me of my brothers that passed this past summer, you have a great looking dog!

Ditto on the pics. Sounds as if you two had a fine day. Good-looking dog, too.

Thanks all. It's a lot of fun getting out there chasing roosters and watching Dakota work. We have a 16 week old Weim puppy that we are starting to train for hunting, should be an eventful year.

Are you guys having any luck with pivots? I have worked the edges of two and have basically come up with nothing. Seems like CRP, the thicker the better, has been the most productive for me.

Good looking dog and looks very familiar :D:D

We need to get those blue boys out together soon.

Walked a couple corn pivot corners with very mature crp! Looked great, but no go. Maybe with a big storm! You would of never seen a record book deer in this stuff! Got to looking around and there was no where for birds to nest. Look for wheat surrounded by crp that is fairly new. Crp surrounded by Wheat at least on 2 sides (Wheat Stubble ) This is where I have seen all the bird sign. 70% of the Hens will nest in the Wheat or good younger crp that produces insects. No chicks could of survived in that jungle I walked. Could not even touch the ground when I walked and it was not good producing crp. If there were birds nearby they would have to use this as cover, because there was nothing else within a couple of miles!

I hit one field yesterday that looked promising ~500 acres of wheat stubble bordered by two cut corn fields ... Dakota didn't even get birdy. Went to a CRP field with tall prairie grass and started seeing birds. We put in a lot of walking miles. Saturday was a good day - not many other hunters around, great weather.

COWEIM , Where did you purchase your dog? One of my buddies is looking for good hunting Weim stock! Found one place in Kansas!

That is an interesting question ... Dakota is a rescue. Got him at just under 2 years old from a rescue in Nebraska. We picked him up in Lincoln, NE in December 08. He had been in a foster home for 3 months. I can tell that someone tried training him, but ... let's just say they treated him pretty rough. Whoever had him probably thought that he was too soft, and gave him up.

We have a 16 week old pup from PM Weimaraners in Montana, excellent field Weims.

Have your buddy check the background on the breeder. My wife helps out with Weim Rescue in Denver and there is one breeder in KS whose dogs turn aggressive with people and dogs after a couple of years ... and they keep breeding.

I will second the recommendation of PM Weimaraner out of Montana. We got our 3 year old from Dawna and could not be happier.
