    Poor Shooting

Funny thing! And the kind of poor shooting I’m sure that’s happens to us all! This morning when hunting a known island of cover that my hunting buddy and I know holds birds. We walked into the island straight into the wind and the Dogs held tight at the edge! We pushed in and a rooster flushed...

    Poor Shooting

That’s a good point. I usually hunt two Brittanys at once and it’s a struggle to keep Them close. One dog at a time and they do great. Makes sense. Dog Competition. Whenever I hunt them alone it’s always closer and I seem to Do better if the birds are there.

Tips for novice pheasant hunter on season

I like to use a hard copy of the public land / walk in hunting atlases. I take notes on the cover and crops nearby and anything else. A lot can change from year to year…but some things stay the same. I’ve hunted with folks who use On X or other on line guides and they blindly follow their phone...

Ultimate guide to pheasant hunting gear

I understand that a new truck camper is not exactly what was meant in this thread. But I plan on taking long upland trips for the next 20 years or so in this rig!! I told my wife that she could stay in bed while I drive from field to field early in the morning. I think that might have sold her!! 😂

When do you start running your dogs?

Okay. I’ve been out the last couple of weekends hunting blue grouse. we’ve taken four, two adults and two juveniles. The adult birds were pointed and retrieved. The juveniles were flushed and when they hit the ground the dogs ran over them a few times before they located it. I’m fairly certain...

What trips do you have planned for this year

Of all upland birds I’m the most crazy about blue...or dusky grouse. I live in colorado and I scout for new places all year for the the hunting season. I think like most people I got interested in them when big game hunting up high and started seeing a big old blue grouse sitting on a log...

    How do I find “Q”

Totally agree with Aggie! Always around some kind of structure. But the “fireweed” or “kotia” what ever you want to call it. The tall thick shit you hate walking through and can’t see your dogs. I’ve found lots of Q there! But it’s always near woody structure! They are we’re they are!! Awesome...

Getting on pheasants during the summer?

I’d would agree that buying pigeons and a tip up cage or a launcher is a far better way to train a pup. You know where the bird is. You can lead your pup into the scent cone. Control the situation. Praise the pup. Training on wild birds is way too unpredictable. IMHO

When do you start running your dogs?

Because the adult the dogs pointed would flush up into a tree and then the chicks would flush one by one up into trees. If they had a scent I’m fairly sure they would have been in the dogs mouth. The mother would make a big act with clucking from the tree...but the girls have located many birds...

When do you start running your dogs?

we were going to head to Nebraska this long weekend for some reservoir fishing and exercise the dogs some until i read this post. I wouldn't want to have the girls disrupt or kill any pheasant or quail chicks. so we went to Wyoming instead to do some trout fishing and hiking. ends up we...
