For any S.D. Buckaroos out there

I like it---Texas isn't the only place with Buckaroos!

    SxS Barrel Length

The Merkel 1620 I use has a 28" barrel with IC/MOD chokes. That setup works fine for me; I'd hate to have the barrels any shorter.

    Crop farming lease prices?

Depends on the crop being raised, type of soil and drainage on the farm, size and shape of tract, ease of accessibility for large machinery, and topography among other things.--around my area (northern Indiana)--if you're talking specialty crops like spearmint, peppermint, potatoes, tomatoes...

    1330 fps

I applaud the earnest souls who have the time and inclination to do the testing described above--it's really what a diligent hunter should do and the above-described results are interesting. All of that said, I haven't used a 12 gauge on pheasants since about 2013. I have one main criteria for...

Late season Hazards for the Birds

In today's local TV newscast there was a segment on the continuing bird flu problems this area has. It has infected geese at local white collar work campuses--medical, professional and insurance complexes with the ubiquitous ornamental ponds-- and several dozen of those birds have died...

Late season Hazards for the Birds

I've been concerned about the bird flu around here (Northern Indiana) because the DNR has stated that there have been a number (I believe over 100) dead Sandhill cranes that have died from the bird flu. This has happened not more than 10-15 miles from my home. I am wondering if any of you out...

    A5 sweet 16!

Yesterday I shot skeet with a guy who had a 1959 12 gauge Auto-5, 26" plain barrel, the gun had been used hard with lots of blue wear and some stock dings. It was choked IC and it was still hammering targets to dust. Did my soul good to see it.

    A5 sweet 16!

About 10 years ago, my wife bought me the best Christmas present I ever got--a 1972 vintage Belgian Browning Sweet 16, choked IC with vent rib. It came with the box and all paperwork. Wasn't unfired, but it looked like it. It's so nice that I hesitate to take it out to shoot it. I have a...

    A5 20ga

I've had the same problems with Browning Service in years past that you guys have had and I agree with you. They do make fine guns most of the time but if you have a problem with one, Heaven help you! All that said, I have 2 Belgian Sweet 16's and 2 Belgian light 20's (Cyl and IC chokes, both...

20ga or 12ga for upland birds

I have used the 16 gauge on wild roosters--and wild ducks--since 2003 and for me it is far and away the best for those birds (I'd use a 12 gauge 3" load on geese). My shotguns, all light and trim--are an A5 16 gauge, a Merkel 1620, and a pre-64 Model 12 with mod choke. I can carry them all day...

    2024 gear review...what worked and what didn't?

Worked well: Browning Sweet 16 A-5, Boss 16 ga. #5's, Columbia Upland jacket (at least 20 years old, still going strong), Red Wing Wingshooter insulated boots (very comfortable and durable), Newt, my 5 1/2 year old Yellow Lab--great retriever/cripple finder, 2024 Suburban Z-71 (amazed that it...

    Lewistown, MT are there birds?

Thanks everyone for your replies; I'll probably be checking with you after the hatch to see how the remainder of the winter goes. My contact tells me we can hunt his ranch and he stated he rarely lets others hunt it. He'll also introduce me to other local ranchers he know. I've always wanted to...

    Lewistown, MT are there birds?

A long time friend has a 1,200 acre hay operation outside Lewistown and he has invited my son and I out next fall to hunt pheasants. The hunt would be on his private ground and that of other ranchers he knows in the area. He is not a bird hunter, but says if we come there will be birds. Anyone...

Let’s talk boots (older crowd on here)

I'm 2 months away from 73 and I wear the Irish Setter Wingshooter boots. Hunted 6 straight days in South Dakota with no problems this fall, very comfortable for me. I also hunt once in awhile in uninsulated Meindl's I bought years ago at Cabela's. And as a back-up I have an older pair of...

    where’s Bob

That's too bad--sorry to see the moderator give in. If you want low humor, check out Saturday Night Live. Stop and THINK: If someone like him came to YOUR farm talking nonsense, would you let him hunt?

Ditch birds - public or private acting?

My son and I have a friend in eastern Illinois who lets us hunt his private land. With very few exceptions, in that area they farm the proverbial fencerow to fencerow, except there are no fencerows! You get the idea---other than ditches and the accompanying filter strips, there IS no other...

Most reasonable lodge wild bird hunting

Brit-- I'll attempt to address your original post. Pay no attention to the naysayers who decry lodges/outfitters. Sometimes, in some circumstances (like yours) they have their place. Before I begin, let me say my son and I hunted hard for 4 days in late October, on private land (NOT a preserve)...
