    Cattle

Bigger issue is when they graze a WPA and the cows put pock marks all over the ground and then when I get there, they are frozen pock marks and making walking less enjoyable. I understand the role of grazing as so many grasses evolved with the buffalo herds. As McFarmer mentioned, cows and...

    Weather isn't cooperating

If you're able to be flexible in your trips, I've got no doubt that we'll see some 40 degree days yet this season here in northeastern SD. And with the snow knocking the light grass down, the hunting will be stellar. I haven't given up hope for you.

    Hunters using heated gloves? Opinions

Blows my mind that our civilization has artificial intelligence taking over entire sectors of the economy and there isn't a glove that is thin enough to operate a trigger AND keep my fingers warm.

Snowfall - It could get pretty tough out there

Thanks. Do you guys have a lot of cattail sloughs or do the pheasants rely on CRP type grasses?

Snowfall - It could get pretty tough out there

How much snow did you guys get down there? Here in Watertown, SD, it was reported 7". Grass is done for now, but the cattails provide a haven that will get the birds through.

Ever gotten in trouble while outdoors alone?

Last spring, I wanted to check out a section of a Waterfowl Production Area that you can only access when the water is frozen. Nila, Sage and I walked back there and there was a small open spot where the water was shallow (the pre 1997 shoreline) and Sage ran over, fell in, but pushed off the...

    How’s your shooting been?

I haven't missed a shot I didn't try to miss in over two decades.

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

I've been blessed to have the opportunity to do habitat development and it is a special experience to see birds flush from a shelterbelt you planted or have your dog dig out a bird from a tree you put into the ground with your hands several years earlier. But in no way, shape or form does...

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

Doesn't become a ballistic cuss word until over 65 yards. I'm still dropping em like stones at 50.

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

As a couple others mentioned, it really depends on the day and the habitat. I'll pass up close shots (30 yards) if its over early season wet cattails and I'll take a 50 yard poke at a rooster flying over a snow covered, harvested bean field.

    Indoor Hunting Dogs

Our dogs would get together and talk about little things we hunters do when they decide to let us go hunting. ;) "Ol' Bob walks about twice as fast as normal and he was being SUPER nice to the misses. You know what that means!!"

    Indoor Hunting Dogs

Broken would be a dog that DIDN'T react when you started getting ready to hunt! :)

    Indoor Hunting Dogs

I have no doubt that dogs recognize items as part of the hunting attire, but I feel they mostly know due to our body language. They don't have a wide vocabulary and rely on other cues to discern what's happening. For Sage, it's always been the socks that set her over the edge. I always wear...

    Them Changes

I'm going to upload a video from my west river pheasant hunt last weekend. The day after I left, some coyote hunters came in and shot 28 coyotes in eighteen hours. Predators are only an issue when you don't have... HABITAT. Nesting, brood rearing and winter thermal cover habitat. And...

Dusty Johnson and a Picture of a FN

For whatever reason, I dislike Dusty Johnson less than most politicians. He's typically been fairly reasonable. But come on, buddy. I mean, maybe he is showing his support for the Pseudorooster Industrial Complex, but I think he simply doesn't know, which is worse.

Hunting Quietly.. unfollowing hunting social media will make hunting better

I record and post my hunts because I like to have them for posterity's sake and I enjoy engaging with other hunters. Actual hunters. Guys who save up a week of vacation and trek across the country to grind it out on public land. I know it can be tough, but it's also greatly rewarding. And I...

    The flush

I like to hunt alone with my dog. I prefer to watch others do the same. The Flush isn't marketed for me. I am already a pheasant hunter and I don't buy any of the apparel or gear they hawk.
