Here is a strange tip I heard.

I've read several articles that talked about the digestibility of soybeans and while I don't have the science to contradict those claims, I've shot a lot of pheasants with a lot of soybean filled crops. On the property I manage, the farmer utilizes no till. Each season I'll have a mix of...

    Pointer or flusher debate

I think you're off to a flying start, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention the ultimate importance of a chapter dedicated to the finer points of dumping mud in the field.

I checked a secret spot today.

I always preface what I'm about to say with "if you want to shoot or trap coyotes, have at it", but killing coyotes doesn't have the positive impact on the local population of pheasants as one might think. If anything, coyotes are beneficial to the pheasants as they prey upon nest raiders like...

    Pheasants - Cold?

I wish I knew exactly the role cold played on pheasants. Certainly the extreme cold can stress them and cause them to burn more calories than normal as their body regulates its temp. But I firmly believe that with adequate thermal cover and easy access to food, a pheasant actually freezing to...

    Indian Reservation Hunting

Each tribe will have their own game/fish departments. Each has different rules and regulations. Some require you to hire a "guide", who is a tribal member. Others will give you a map that shows the tribally owned land and set you free. I believe the reservation you're talking about is...

    Preferred Hunt Start Time

Usually head out about 2:00pm or so.

    Pierre

I would consider Pierre to be one of SD's more popular destinations for upland hunting, particularly as guys with trailers full of pointers get excited about shooting spring of the year grouse. The National Grasslands hold birds, but get a ton of pressure. Much of the public land around Pierre...

    where’s Bob

I wasn't going to weigh in on this thread, but feel the need to say that Goose and Bob Peters are two distinct, very real Americans.

New hack: Will birds flock to me?

Kerrygold, unsalted, is a good, safe bet for quality butter. You can get some local butters that are off the charts, but they aren't the most accessible. Start with KG and see what you think. ;) As for Vienna Sausages, you might be surprised where they're sold. Best part, they age like fine...

    Vikings game

I really, really hope the Lions can put a run together. They're due and it would be nice to see the NFC North bring one home again. Been a few years since #12 lifted the Lombardi trophy.

New hack: Will birds flock to me?

The shirt is great and I'll assume you're already avoiding the grabass, fondue, gucci suburban short bus that inhibits so many pheasant hunters from reaching their full potential. Question one - how many times have you looked at OnX or the SDGFP interactive public atlas today? A guy should be...

Changing an unconstitutional law in North Dakota

The season extension through the end of January has the greatest affect on the lives of those consumed by pheasant hunting. A whole lot of folks are watching playoffs, ice fishing or just don't hate the pheasants enough to hunt them late season. Which is super glorious. Get the law changed...

    No weekend reports?

Its a pretty wonderful day and age to be a pheasant hunter on public land in South Dakota.

    No weekend reports?

Was out on Sunday and shot three roosters. Planning to get out tomorrow and see what the local WPAs have to offer.

    Tripping or Falling

I fall a few times each year. Sometimes it's an electric fence wire I didn't see, but usually it's uneven ground while my focus is elsewhere or gnarly cattails I'm trying to bust through. If there's a lot of snow, I'll get hung up on a drift. I did have both feet break through the ice earlier...

    Wind

Find areas that aren't windy. I can't tell you how often on a super windy day, I'll get down into a ravine or the backside of some cattails and I can feel that the wind is gone and then the pheasants flush. Wind sketches out all wildlife. There is no real great answer, just get out and do it...

Help on a special kind of wild pheasant.

You've gotta toss that KBB on the wall. I've been hunting 30+ years and have yet to shoot a KBB or a melly.

    2025 Pheasant Season out west/midwest

Sorry, it's a long and winding tale of sarcasm, but when A5 said I've got tons of uneducated pheasants with no hunting pressure in this area, I countered by saying they're all pen raised pheasants. Neither of which are true.
