    2024/2025 Pheasant Hunting Videos

This is the only video I have watched this year, that was an awesome recovery! What were you (or the guy doing the shooting) doing when he recovered that last bird, looked like beating it's tail end on the gun's stock....maybe using the bird to knock snow out of the trigger/receiver??? Nice...

Smart birds or all bunched up?

My last 2 weeks, I have seen plenty of birds, but they are jumpy, often flushing 100+ yards in front of us. My shooting has been a bit to be less than desired. Had my chances at limits but finished with just 2 birds on each of my last 2 outings. I trust I will shoot better tomorrow and be...

    Tripping or Falling

Our terraces are filthy with holes, a hazard to walk them...a hazard to just cross them. I would like to walk the tops, but no way. I assume all the digging was badgers after mice and ground squirrels (13-lined ground squirrels is what we have here). Bob's fishing experience is exactly why I...

Just keep increasing your lead Bob!

Is this an old or young pheasant?

Posted these spurs in a different thread here. I think you can assume that if the spur has a sharp point they are at least a season old (1.5 yr) bird.

    New Strap Vest

I hope the game pouch is full of blood stains and feather after the weekend!

Help on a special kind of wild pheasant.

My buddy shot a lighter colored (blondish) rooster last season. The legs were more yellowish and just a callous like bump where the spurs would have been. I am guessing a hermorphadit. I might have even posted a pic of it here. Edit: it had one spur...

    Tripping or Falling

Those tracker devices might be handy so you family can find your body for a service. Meeting our maker couldn't come in a better way than a heart attack in your favorite hunting area. If I am so lucky to have this happens to me, I hope the smile is still on my face when I (my shell) is found!

    Wind

Uh, strong wind. A whole different experience. They get up and are gone in a second...most of the time, once in a while, one try's to buck the wind and is an almost stationary target. I hope your temps are above freezing. Good luck, let us know how it goes. Add: I guess I have never not...

    Future of CRP ?

The future of CRP is the future of Iowa pheasant hunting. Much of our other cover is getting torn-out rapidly.

    Ditch/Road Hunting. IMPORTANT-MUST READ

I saw the length of the OP and skipped down to the next posts and quickly decided Bob had a bit of time on his hands by the shear length and title of this thread. Must have been a slow day at work. Looking at the length, I think there must be books published with less content. Good to have...

    Tripping or Falling

Funny topic. Until 3-4 years ago (56 or 57 years old), I really hadn't fallen. That year I had 2 dandies and another one or 2, maybe one or 2 since, but not this season...yet. One hard fall I got tangled in a dog cable by my back door, the other was into a big badger-hole, I fell hard...that...

    Land prices.

Most around here $250 to $350 for cash rent. Need a good CRP rate to compete with that.

Old roosters are tough, or tough roosters are old?

Not exceptionally long, but pretty much the entire spur has turned white...nice ivory spurs! Shot him Saturday. Last night I made over 12 pounds of breakfast sausage, it included him.

Old roosters are tough, or tough roosters are old?

Was that out west? Never see tail feathers like that here, spurs grow, but not tails like those!

Old roosters are tough, or tough roosters are old?

The last pic was for A5. Old birds are lucky birds, maybe they RUN like heck at the first sign of trouble. Running might not be the best choice for them in all situations, but against hunters it is. Maybe they find out of the way roosting/lofting places.

    Snowshoeing for pheasants?

Gim nailed what I am driving at, it isn't at all about the shooting the of the roosters, it is the hens you bust out of their roost's. Like A-5 says, if there are almost unlimited roosting options, not a big deal...but in places with limited heavy themal habitat (like much of Iowa), on a 5...

    Snowshoeing for pheasants?

If there is enough snow to warrant snowshoes, maybe it is a good time not to stir the birds up. Life for them would be a real bitch when there is over a foot of powder to try to find a meal and a warm place to ride out the cold in. The older I get, the more compassion I have for them. I...
