    HB 1236 Safety Zone Increase

I yield. I don't live in SD. But I trust that the people that do live there get to make the rules, and I choose to hunt in SD and I chose to follow their rules. Has any homeowner from SD complained about the new rule?

    HB 1236 Safety Zone Increase

Can't buy that argument. The ones I know in rural SD have been there for generations. Homes at best are modest, but great people - salt of the earth types. Its their home 365, where they raise their family and try to make a living off the land and lots of them allow us out of staters to freely...

    HB 1236 Safety Zone Increase

I think the bill is very poorly written. Hope the final draft is much better. Couple of things that aren't clear. It says firearms not shotguns. 22 or rifled slug could be deadly past a quarter mile. Hunters in general are getting push back from others, which includes nonhunters, and that...

What produces recoil? Velocity or payload?

I may regret this... I've been shooting shotguns for over 50 years and I'm struggling to understand why this is a discussion, but here is my take -- 1. 12-gauge kicks (scientific term?) more than 16, 20 or 410. 2. High brass shells kick - that term again - more than low brass shells 3. Never...

    Vest suggestions

I've been using Chief Upland for 4-5 years. It works well for me, and I like the way you can rearrange, add or remove different attachments with the molle system and customize the vest to preferences and weather conditions. My interaction with their customer service has been outstanding.

    Private land?

Is pay-to-play the primary way to gain access to decent private land? Absolutely NO. Unless you consider taking the landowner's family to dinner or my approach, include sharing my homemade jams and jelly from my farm. My experience is some of the best people on earth live in SD and for the...

    Private land?

Yes we actually did that for the last 10 years on one piece of property! Somehow it seemed like I drew the short straw most of the time. Finally got somewhat smarter and now I just call ahead. Just 80 acres, half trees but it was between 2 large ag fields, always good and really great if there...

    License check. Is this legal?

It's actually a little more complicated than that. The 1924 Open Fields Doctrine originated from the prohibition-era Supreme Court decision Hester v. United States, where the court held that “the special protection accorded by the Fourth Amendment to the people in their ‘persons, houses...

    Looking for expert opinions

Lot of "it depends', as Moose said, to even try to answer your question. Time of year - opening weekend or January. Weather - snow or 90 degrees, wind, wet or dry How big is the group Crops in or out Like Moose, I like grown up ditches with not much cover nearby. Like in a picked corn field or...

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

As a NR the two 5 day works fine for me - 3 birds per day, 15 possession limit, it's been a good trip. 1200 miles one way. At the end of 5 days hunting, I need a rest. I suggested to SDGFP in their survey a yearly NR license but suspect it would cost about the same as two 5/10 licenses. My...

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

All true. However, I did miss the brood count. Less now than the first year it was stopped. How dare they was my first reaction. I studied the report every year for at least 30 minutes after receiving it. Probably called a fellow hunter to hear his thoughts about it. To me it was kind of like...

One thing that always sticks with me

That spot looks familiar. Just made mine for second week of November. Hoping for good weather. Picture from 2011 - good memories, need to make some more-soon!

    Importance of eCollars?

I started training bird dogs in the early 80s. No collars that I knew of, barrels, whistles, short and long leads were my tools. First collars I had were very heavy and not blessed with all the technology and capabilities that are available today. I've found the use of collars results in less...

    Vet Recommends Eye Removal

My 11-year-old Brit has just been diagnosed with glaucoma in one eye. Heart breaker. I've been putting dorzolamide and latanoprost drops for a week which vet said would help reduce the pressure in the eye. It did seem to help a little. Vet and my research say there is a significant chance the...

"Thank you" for access to land?

This thread reminded me of one of my best memories in pursuit of pheasants in SD. When growing up in East Tn in the 60s, 70s, we chased quail, grouse and rabbits. At that time there were not huntable deer or turkey populations, so we were into birds and bird dogs. Quail population took a dive...

"Thank you" for access to land?

For years my go-to was homemade jams and jelly - muscadine, blackberry, peach, blueberry that mostly came from my property. Without fail, the next year I would be handed empty jars to be refilled for the next trip. In some cases, this occurred for decades.

    Prairie Storm Issue

I have been using PS exclusively for the last 8 to 10 years - when I could get them. Never had a single issue with the shells, except occasionally finding them on the shelf. Usually shoot 2 3/4 lead, 3-inch steel on rare occasions when required. Lots of variables at play, experience, age, dogs...
