    Newbie in Oklahoma, any tips?

Best since 2016, hasn’t been as good as 2016 was where I’m at. But it hasn’t been bad.

Bobs are bobs, I’ve hunted Nebraska, and Kansas. Brush and weeds. If it looks birdy hunt it if you can.

    Montana pheasant hunt

Just got back from a hunt in eastern Montana. I was impressed with the number of Huns. Pheasant and sharp tail numbers seemed about the same as last year. This was my fourth year going. My first year I never saw a hun. 2nd year I finally saw a covey and got 1 bird. Last year I saw multiple...

Tristar Viper G2 or Weatherby Element - Back Up & Rainy Day Gun

Very true, my main gun I’ve hunted with the last year is a Beretta a300. And I’ve been shooting my dads old Franchi 48 Al. Not expensive but not clunkers and the Franchi has sentimental value. Then if it’s a long haul or quail, I’ll take my 20 gauge over under. I’ve got my eye on a few really...

Tristar Viper G2 or Weatherby Element - Back Up & Rainy Day Gun

I definitely take a backup. I guess if I had a really expensive gun I’d take a rainy day gun too. But even if I was just going to Kansas which isn’t a long way for me, it’d still be terrible to waste that trip if I had gun issues. I’ve actually had a gun issue on a long trip. Thumb safety on an...

    Franchi 48 al

I have one that was my dads. He never used anything else, that I saw. I’m sure before my time he did. It’s incredibly light, reliable and shoots good. It will kick obviously with heavy loads.

Here's my trips I've planned for fall.

I’m planning a Montana trip in October pheasant, Huns and sharps. All though by that time sharps are tough. I’ll hit Kansas in Nov, Dec. possibly Nebraska. The quail situation here in Ok is looking up. I’ve seen several broods. More than the last few years for sure. Anything can happen though...

    Olap fee

Next year Oklahoma will charge a 100 olap , walk in, fee. It also gets you access to timberlands in the east. Will this be the start of a new trend for walk in states? Oklahoma isn’t the first state you think of for walk in areas. But it could still be the start. Any thoughts for or against?

Want to give Iowa public a try

I’ve hunted the last 7 years mostly just me my dog and my wife. She doesn’t hunt but saves me lots of steps by driving. You can’t just head out across any field, I’ve never had much luck in stalks. I’d rather hunt me and a dog and maybe 1 or 2 more. The big groups of walkers and blockers seems...

Why is deer hunting so popular?

i Grew up doing both. I loved deer hunting when I was younger. I was lucky to grow up on a farm with lots of quail Ive loved it since young too. I don’t deer hunt very much now. It’s barely hunting really, just sitting and waiting. I enjoy seeing deer, I’m just not invested enough anymore to sit...

    Meat Handling on the Road

I’ve cleaned with 1 wing, then kept them in an ice chest for 5 days. I wish the wing wasn’t on there. There has to be a lot of bacteria transfer. But they seemed fine when I got home. And I ate them without incident. As for best eating. The easiest to me is fajitas.

What’s the cover at beaver looking like?

2016 I live by Sandy Sanders same scenario. Saw people from all over. Met a grandad, father and son who drove up from Dallas for the afternoon to “see all the quail”. 3 guys in a single cab no dogs. Big stock tank by one of the entrances had quail feathers about 2 inches deep about 10 foot...

    Prairie grouse trip

Prarie grouse live in a big beautiful habitat. I love hunting them. Probably a little less than pheasant or quail but it’s still a very cool hunt. I recently went to the north shore of Minnesota and saw my first ruffed grouse. In fact my Britany Piper was with us and pointed it. Now I’d love to...

    Mckelvie National Forrest Trip Advice

Valentine is the closest town big enough for a vet, supplies etc. I only had luck high. The hills are big I found birds high up in depressions. Valentine was about 25 miles. You can get some stuff at the reservoir. I had AT&T spotty service. I can’t imagine anything will work consistently...

    Reports

i made 2 trips up. Bird numbers where I hunted were way off. The grass on most of the private land is grazed to the ground. I ranch so I understand there’s not much you can do when it’s dry, but everywhere looked like a pool table. Sure hope we see moisture this spring. Our terrible drought in...
