    Quail hunting Southeast Kansas

I grew up hunting southern Wilson county in the 60s-70s. Getting a limit was entirely about shooting success, not bird numbers. Big farming hasn't helped, but the cedar takeover on the old hill pastures has been worse.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

I'm in Wilson county, wasn't as dry as some a bit southwest of me along the Oklahoma border, but lots of ponds dry.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Here on the other side of the state the drought is definetely over. I had 4" Thursday night and 4.8" last night with multiple tornadoes scattered around the area. Lots of water everywhere you look.

    Remember Poly Chokes?

The thing that worries me is the IC setting is great out to 30 yards or so with the 1 oz 5 or 6 loads I've tried, the IM is pretty nice at 35 yards, but really tight at 25-30. Unlike my double trigger SxS I can't wait to decide which choke to use till after the bird gets up.

    Remember Poly Chokes?

I bought an 870 Wingmaster 2 3/4" 20 ga back in the early 70s. The modified choke barrel shot like a rifle, was no good on quail. I had a Polychoke put on and had good luck with it. The skeet and IC settings are somewhat loose, but in brush country quail hunting I had a lot of good days. The...

    2023/2024 Pheasant Hunting Videos

I once got a sort of triple in western Kansas. Had a bird get up and dropped him, at the shot another got up and I got him. At the shot another got up and got him. 3 quick chances but they didn't flush at the same time.

I've still got a sack of the yellow F1 wads. Might be too old and getting brittle.

Curious about 1 oz 20 ga loads in the AA and HS hulls. I loaded a few in Fed game and Top Gun hulls using CB AA clone wads with the powder seal cup flaired to help seal off the straight wall case. Cheesy had a couple bloopers using them so I'm planning on using the Winchesters now. I've not...

    Chokes matter?

This one is really tight. Like I posted above the cyl tube measures .005 constriction(really skeet 1), the IC - .011(skeet 2), Mod - .0185(Heavy mod). The load tested in the other post was with a European wad no longer imported that has a reputation for really tight loads.

    Chokes matter?

I spent a few days last week in South Dakota on private ground that gets hunted some. Can't remember that I had any shots under 30 yards. Got limits on two days and 2 birds the third day that was a shorter time hunting. Gun was a SxS 16 ga shooting home loaded 1 1/8-5s through IC/Mod chokes...

    Great shots

Opening day I got my 3 birds with 4 shots, one of them I put a second shot into as it was falling into the cover. Ended the weekend with 5 birds on 8 shots. The two misses came on a distant bird that got up as I was regaining balance from catching a foot in the weeds. That will probably jinx me...

    16ga ammo sale

I'm not interested in such high velocities. I've had great luck with my 16 SxS using home loaded 1 1/8-5s at anywhere from 1230-1275 for the different loads. Several times doing better than the others in the group using 12 ga high velocity factory loads, may of been the difference in centered...

Chokes for wild pheasants in a 16 ga. O/U

According to a sticky post on 16ga.com, bore diameters vary by manufacturer with several listed. My Dickinson Estate SxS measures .6675, Citori Invector barrels were said to measure .667 My choke tubes are a bit tight, but give nice patterns. Just close to one notch tighter than marked. My...

Chokes for wild pheasants in a 16 ga. O/U

I use IC and Mod in my SxS 16, but with my 1 1/8-5s loads it patterns a bit tighter than marked.

How to get better at wingshooting

Last years trip to South Dakota left me pretty unhappy with my shooting. I've had a Doall manual thrower for years but my wife can't cock it and I was getting less practice. Bought a Champion Wheelybird 2 with the remote. Practiced off and on all summer, mostly at an angle away from the trap...

Why is deer hunting so popular?

In my younger years I had big buck fever, put 3 160"+ whitetail on the wall. All came from the home place. The older I get the less the big ones matter to me. I've put a buck and two does in the freezer every year for groceries for at least 30 years, those old bucks get kind of tough. I do all...

What are you doing to get ready for the upcoming season?

In addition to all the gym work and hiking, lately I've been cutting hedge posts for a cousin. Over 250 so far, sawing about 2-2 1/2 hours at a time. At 70 years old it's getting kind of tiring. Also gone through about 3 boxes of clays over the last couple months. Sure looking forward to that...

    SXS shotguns

I've always been a fan of the SxS. Shot quail early on with the family Stevens 311 hammer 12 ga. Then went through a progression of Mossberg 500 16 ga, 870 12, 1100 12, and my pheasant magnet Beretta m391 12 and 686 Onix Sporting. These days my SxS is a Dickinson Estate 16 ga, the stock could...
