When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

About 15 or 17 years ago in Kansas was pretty hard to beat. 4 man limits of 4 birds in a few hours. We haven’t even bothered going the last 2 years though out west. Would have loved to see some days of the “golden days”. Have been very lucky to have friends with private access in South...

    A5 16gauge

Great articulate reasoning on why the new are junk and the old are better. I traded a bucket of tomatoes to him for it as he was on his death bed, he probably told my grandma how he took me on that deal.

I know it’s your opinion and others have opinions, but elaborate on your reasons? I have neither. Unless you count my grandpas Savage 745 that’s close.

    Slip on recoil pad-stock treatment

I bought a 1950s Ithaca 37 that had a slip on pad. Under the pad was significantly darker than the exposed wood. Like perfect line and substantially darker. Stripped the finish and redid the stock. The solution is to put a Pachmayr Old English Decelerator on it and be done with it.

    Looking for a New O/U

I was looking for a BR110 last year and ended up picking up a used Rizzini Aurum Light (20 guage, alloy frame), for less than a new BR110 was from the Cabelas used gun rack. Love that thing. My problem is I have way too many to shoot now.

    Hunting accident in Harvey County

That taking the safety off as the gun is shouldered is so ingrained in me, that the occasional times I'll leave the safety off as I'm shooting backyards clays (standing in position, at the ready to make the shot), that it messes up my mount. I can't even do a premount to shoot clays (or actual...

Semi repost: what is everyone's layering system

Merino base of a tshirt, long sleeve tshirt, ot heavier quarter zip with hood. Then a quarter zip synthetic long sleeve of some type. If it’s dry maybe a Western Welder pearl snap. Sometimes a synthetic hoody if it’s cold Outer shell is an old Cabelas wind stopper upland soft shell. If...

    Pheasant Breakfast Sausage

I used bacon for my fat. I think straight pork fat and a bit more would have been a better choice. It wasn’t bad by any means. I think straight pork fat would have been better. I make a lot of deer sausage. Keep things cold. On the verge of frozen. It all goes through the grinder better...

    Garmin Alpha 300 Lanyard

I have redundant doubled up paracord on my 550 plus, both long enough I can use around my neck for short jaunts. On all day hunts I loop them through a loop on my strap vest and rest it in a pocket.

Looking for a new 20 or 16 gauge side by side shotgun...your opinions are welcomed!

It isn’t marked. I’m guessing it’s a Sauer forging and then finished by a small shop. A guild gun, even if the German gurus get upset saying that. The action of my top two pictures are identical, just the engraving and accoutrements are different between them.

Merkel 1620s on the used market is another option. 16 on their 20 frame. What I’ve dorked around with buying older used, I could have combined dollars for a Merkel. That said, older used are not a bad option. My “new” 110 year old 16 this weekend. Twin sister 16 but only 105 years old...
