NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

I once got stung by a scorpion while deer hunting in the Chautauqua Hills in the dead of winter. 0 degrees and a foot of snow on the ground. F’er crawled up my shirt and stung me in the back. Wasn’t expecting that.

    Chicks

Seeing quite a few baby quail and turkeys around the home place in SEK. I’ve heard some encouraging reports on pheasants and quail from my farmer friends out west.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

I’ve been hearing some good reports from a couple of my farmer friends out west. With decent carryover in many places from last year, and hopefully a good hatch this year, I have some optimism for the coming season. Quail are looking pretty good in my AO. We will see what the future holds.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

We’ve had the most rain we’ve had in several years in SEK. Almost too much in places, but I’ll take it.

    Goodbye '24-'25 Non-Season

There are places in the state that have significantly more birds than where you hunt, based on your reports.

    Ringing in 2025 correctly!

There are pockets of pretty decent pheasant numbers in western Kansas, that I found even during the worst years. I have the chance to hunt around a couple of feedlots where they really pack in during the wintertime, and can kick up hundreds. “Pockets” is the key. It very much depends on where...

    Yips

I have always just seemed to run hot and cold. It is what it is. I don’t worry too much about it.

    Lack of hens

They hatch out 50/50. If there are roosters around, the hens are too, somewhere (and vice versa).

    What would your reaction be?

Wow! That’s wild. 17 trucks? Shooting a bird over your friend’s pointed dog? I’m usually pretty calm, cool, and collected, but I have no idea how I’d have reacted to that one.

    Rain

They most certainly do. Many become entirely non navigable. I had plans of being out there to hunt the opener, but I’m going to let things dry out for a few days.

    And thus it begins

From what I’ve seen and heard from last season, and so far this year, is that there are more birds around than there’s been in some time. Obviously it depends on where you are, and they definitely have a long ways to go, but things might just be looking up a bit. I sure hope so.

Looks like I am not the only one that is dry....

Been nearly 5 years of terrible drought here in my part of southeast Kansas. An area that usually gets pretty good precipitation.

    Forecast

Good numbers of quail in my part of SEK (for 21st century standards). Multiple large coveys on all of the properties I hunt, including right by my house. I see them every day. The quail and turkeys have both had good hatches here in the last couple of years. Our turkeys were almost gone, but...
