    Slip on recoil pad-stock treatment

Slip on recoil pads are as ugly as homemade sin. Also, on most field guns, it lowers the point of impact as it increases the length of pull. Unless those are your goals, as Cheesy suggested, have a real recoil pad installed.

    Tail Length

That's why you cannot hunt til 10:00 a.m. They need time to plant the birds each morning.

    Tripping or Falling

Reminds me of the words of the late, great, Jimmy Buffett. "I would rather die while I am living than live while I'm dead."

    Tripping or Falling

Reading this thread does make me feel better. I fell twice this season while duck hunting on the Mississippi River. I slipped on rocks on wing dams.

    MN report

We had 4-5" of light powdery snow. I did see three pheasants flush at long distance but 12 held tight. Most of the upland cover always covered with snow and blown down. The birds were mostly in the edges of brushy cover.

    MN report

I have done all my MN pheasant hunting in SE Minnesota this season. It has not been great but it has not been bad either. Last night and today we got our first plowable snow. My neighbor and I got out this afternoon for about 1.5 hours. My dog pointed/flushed a total of 12 pheasants. She is...

    Snowshoeing for pheasants?

I hunted on snowshoes many times when I was a kid in NE Michigan for hares. I much preferred not using snowshoes. I have a question: If the snow is deep enough to warrant using snowshoes, how is a dog able to move?

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I do not know anything about your friend's character or his recent behavior. I have personally witnessed two hen pheasants fly into a power line and kill themselves. Both circumstances involved my father on his only hunting trips to Iowa. The first time, I was driving the car, my father was...

    Coming from Canada

Hunting ditches in Iowa is legal. Why would it not be looked on favorably? Also, what do Canadian plates have to do with it?

    Rising straight away shot

Yeah. However, the focus is on the bird, not the gun. I may see the gun, but I am not focused on it. It's not unlike swinging a bat at a baseball. You may see the bat hit the ball but you must "keep your eyes on the ball" it order to hit it.

Warmest supple gloves for 15 degree weather

Have you ever tried attaching these to the inside of your wrists (where the blood vessels are near the surface) while hunting? They help keep your hands and body warm.

Semi repost: what is everyone's layering system

I recall a tip that I read several years ago. I think it was written by the Shotgun Editor for Field and Stream magazine (Phil Bourjaily). He said when you step out of the truck to go pheasant hunting, you should feel that you are cold, underdressed. In cold, single digit temperatures, I wear...

    Rising straight away shot

One question to ask your self after the shot: What was the last thing that you saw when you pressed the trigger? There is only one correct answer to that question. If your answer is anything other than the target/bird, you are doing it wrong. Even if your shot was a hit.

I think it is Chris Batha who says: 'In wing shooting, there are two things you should see, but never look at: the bead and the lead.'

    Golden Hour Hunting???

Phun Pheasant Phact: When I hunt a roosting field during the last hour of the day, the birds that will not survive til morning are in my vest.

    Iowa's opener is today.

I dealt with the same thing about 6 or 7 years ago. I did two visits to physicians and got steroid injections that did provide immediate but temporary relief. The second physician was a podiatrist who recommended orthotics. As I am of limited financial means, I purchase affordable shoes and...

    Strange Deer Encounter

This past Sunday while hunting in NC Iowa, we came across a deer that was acting very strange. My dog approached the deer directly and I called her off. I had her sit and took a photo. The deer was near a water source and if you look closely there is snot and drool dripping from its nostrils...
