    Turtle

I just saw in my local newspaper that a fellow member and Kansas native has passed. He went by Turtle on the boards but I believe Greg was known to several here on a personal level. Just wanted to pass along the info.

    Dog friendly hotel - Russell

It’s been quite a few years but I believe the one I stayed at was the Russell Inn. Definitely fit the budget hotel and accepted dogs part. Wasn’t the worst place I’ve ever slept but certainly not the nicest either.

I’ve got a couple Gsp’s. I would be very happy if I stumble upon some mearns but my main focus for this trip is going to be gambels and blues. Is there a certain brand or type of call that you would recommend?

Chemist, Good info! First I’ve really heard about about using a quail call. I knew they were out there but hadn’t really heard of anyone using them. Powderhorn, Really interesting observation about them dispersing, first I’ve heard anyone talk about this. Also great suggestion on the carry map...

How many birds would you lose/find without a dog?

The answer for me would be zero. I’d say 89% of my enjoyment from hunting comes from the dogs, 10% nature and 1% shooting birds. I wouldn’t continue to hunt without a dog, I’d just fish or hike more.

thank you for the insight. I definitely have no desire to put my dogs in a dangerous situation so I’ll definitely take that info into consideration.

Nerd, I’m tentatively looking at the area between denning to silver city to truth or consequences to las cruces. Since I’m hunting public and camping I like to stay flexible so I can move if needed. I definitely want to have a shot at gambles and it seems like that I25 corridor area is about...

    New Mexico

I’m planning to travel to NM the 1st week of February. Never hunted desert birds before so any and all advice is appreciated. Aside from the hunting aspect I’ll probably try and boondock while I’m there. Obviously it’s situational but is it safe to leave my camp set up for the day while I’m...

    Snow

Good news is that with this cold snap you’ll be able to get down all the roads that were mush a week or 2 ago.

    Road conditions

Greg, I’m sorry to hear about your pup. It’s great that you were able to get him out one last time to enjoy the hunt and that you had your family with you. I think your dad would be very happy and proud of that.

    Road conditions

Guessing things will be starting to dry up some but I ran into multiple roads that weren’t passable on Thursday. Moved south some on Friday and the roads were better but bird numbers dried up as well.

Those phragmites can be ridiculous. Seem to be 10’ tall and so thick you can’t hardly force your way thru and forget about mounting a gun. Got out Thursday morning and got 2 right away. Didn’t have another rooster in gun range in the next day and half of hard hunting. Did see probably close to...

    Road conditions

Question for those that live or spend time west of let’s say ks highway 14. Have the roads dried up enough to get around when they are thawed out? Considering driving out Thursday but I hate not being able to get to half the spots without trying to slog thru the muddy roads to get there.

    Finally!

After one of my dogs having tplo surgery in late August we finally hit the field for an honest days hunt. Birds were pretty scarce, scratched out 1 old rooster and a quail but it was great just being out and seeing my old dogs doing what they love.

    Bad timing

It has been a very exhausting 5 days so far. Pills I just wrap up in a piece of sliced cheese and down they go. 12 weeks of keep him cooped up will probably drive us all crazy though.

    Bad timing

I did talk to them. Price was right in line with every other place I talked to. Problem was a consult was a week out and surgery likely 2-3 weeks after that. I wasn’t willing to wait that long for surgery. Guy I ended up going with did the consult and surgery same day since I was from out of town.

Successful tplo performed Friday. Now comes the hard part.

    Bad timing

Lol, it’s my dog but I can certainly see where the question came from. I pretty routinely tell my 2 sons that he is their brother and my favorite child because he doesn’t talk back and does what he’s told most of the time.

    Bad timing

Age is a concern for me as well. My dog is 9 and has a lot of miles under him but he’s in great shape otherwise. Just a freak accident so hopefully he’ll be a good candidate for surgery. Bracing really isn’t an option as he refuses to use the leg at all, he has quickly become pretty agile as a...
