    Slowing your dog

Totally understand they are separate issues. Luckily, she is collar conditioned so I'm comfortable with that aspect. She's also solid with whistle commands (come, sit, turn around). What do you suggest as far as keeping her close? And what do you suggest for steady to flush/wing/shot? I...

    Slowing your dog

This post is speaking to my soul. My first time ever wild bird hunting was last month in SD. I thought I had pretty good control of my flusher. We go on walks 4x a day. She stays relatively close. Sits at whistle on command. But man when I turned her loose on wild birds it was a whole...

    Sub-Zero Temps Worth The Trip?

I was in Northern Central SD in Mid-December and hunted in 50mph winds with negative 20 wind chills. I was concerned about the same things. Given I only had 3 days to hunt, it wasn't really an option to stay inside. The hardest part was keeping my hands warm. It wasn't terrible, though, as I...

Gear Recommendations - Mid-December First Timer

Reporting back and thanking yall for your helpful tips. We were out there hunting Thursday in the 50mph wind and negative 20 windchill. Our gear help up nicely though and we were able to hunt all day. Got two roosters that day, and 5 the next. Plan on being back next year and hopefully the...

Are you using the full body suit? I just don’t know if I have it in me to put my dog out there in a full latex body suit.

Thanks everyone. Since she’s used to warmer weather I may get a vest just in case.

Gear Recommendations - Mid-December First Timer

Looking at the weather up where I’ll be hunting today. Wind blowing 50mph and minus 7 windchill. Yikes. At what temperature, if any, do I need to consider putting a vest or something on my springer to keep her warm? I’m also assuming hunting in 50mph winds is a no-go.

Really appreciate it everyone. Super excited for the trip. Definitely will get Mushers Secret for the dog. Will look at some different glove options. Do yall recommend merino wool socks?

Gear Recommendations - Mid-December First Timer

Appreciate all the replies so far. Will definitely check out the Mushers Paw. Do you have your Springer wear a vest? I think she’d be fine without it but not sure. And I’m hearing the “bring two boots” frequently also. Not all that enthusiastic about buying another pair of boots, but sounds...

Gear Recommendations - Mid-December First Timer

Thanks yall. Dog is a Springer. I am planning on bringing my boot dryer. Boots are Danner un-insulated 8’’ waterproof. Have read as long as I have good socks, then I should be okay but open to other thoughts. Coming up from Texas and have zero experience with that level of potential cold.

Gear Recommendations - Mid-December First Timer

I’m headed up to hunt the Aberdeen area in mid-December with my dog. This is my first time pheasant hunting in SD. Would love your gear/clothing recommendations for this time of year, including things to consider for my dog. I understand weather is unpredictable in mid-December but this was...
