Ruff Grouse in NW Wyoming are awesome

There are a few Ruffies in the northern Uinta's but not many. I have hunted grouse all over WY and it is really interesting how the ruffies are really concentrated, and in high numbers in NW Wyoming. Based on numbers I have seen it would be worth the drive to hunt them.

    Arizona Quail Hunt 23-24 Season

I am curious how other folks hunting in AZ this year did for Quail? Hunting for Gambels in AZ this year was pretty decent for me. Before going I had heard that it was not a good year so I was pleasantly surprised. In fact after I got down there and hunted I texted several friends to tell them...

    Preferred 20 Gauge Shell

There is actually a fair amount of research out there on ideal loads for each gauge. I believe for the 20 ga it is thought that the 2-3/4 is the best with 7/8 or 1oz of shot since that is what they call a 'square" load. Anything bigger and you get a longer shot string, although it might be...

    Gucci Time

I hunt with an Italian Benelli, either a 12 ga M2 or a 20 ga M2. I like those third and fourth shots. I have brush pants and a shock collar, and sometimes I wear a jacket that has patches on the forearms, elbows and shoulders (in some type of suede), and a nice Bird 'n' Lite vest with whistle...

    Pheasant hunting Bighorn Basin

Just returned from 4 days hunting in the Bighorn Basin from Thermopolis to Lovell. I had to attend a meeting in Cody so I thought I would give that area a try since I was already there. I hunted several walkin properties along Gooseberry Creek and Grass Creek. The habitat was not good at all...

    Eastern Oregon Trip #2

When people talk about "eastern OR" what does that mean. SE, NE, East central??? What kind of stuff are you looking at to hunt? River and creek bottoms or sagebrush flats? I'm not looking for points on a map, just trying to figure out what part of the state to concentrate the all the driving...

Looking for a black lab puppy. Not paying more than 500.

I agree with those above. $500 would get you a decent backyard dog 30 years ago, but things are different now. All of the problems listed are true things for labs and a $500 breeder is probably not going to have that all checked out. In fact, you could make the case that a $500 breeder should...

Ruff Grouse in NW Wyoming are awesome

I realize this is a pheasant forum but it seems like there are posts for other upland birds so here is one on ruff grouse in Wyoming. I have hunted NW Wyoming for Ruff Grouse about 25 years now. There is really some outsanding grouse hunting in Wyoming. I have hunted them from near the...

    Snow!

Well, within two days we have gone from October conditions to December conditions! Almost a foot of snow with 20-30 mph winds in a large swath of the state north of Pierre. We almost went home, but decided to stick it out. Birds are in THICK COVER!!! No grass available, all covered with...

Hunting report from center of SD end of October

Three of us just hunted 5 days in the central part of SoDak 10/23- 10/27. We shot limits every day and usually done by 2 or so. A LOT more birds than last year. I would say at least 2-3 times as many birds. Almost all of the birds we killed were young-of-year, and 5 of 45 were really young...

Hunting report from north of Pierre Oct 29

Four of us just spent 5 days hunting north of Pierre and east of the MO River. We hunt an area about 70 miles N/S and 40 miles E/W. We each walked over 5 miles each day and a couple days we all walked 8-10 miles. We all have decent dogs. We put a total of 45 birds in the cooler, so we were...

    Hunting report from central SD

Background: Have hunted SD in the same area for the last 15 years. Have always hunted a mix of public, WPAs, walk-in, private, ditches, etc. We always hunt an area 60 miles north to south, 40 miles east to west that is north of Pierre and east of the MO river. Basically Gettysburg is the...

2013 Report from SDGF&P on brood counts and bird numbers

A recent report on brood counts in South Dakota for 2013. According to the report both brood counts and adult bird counts are down > 50% from 2012. I personally found pheasant numbers in 2012 MUCH reduced from what they were in previous years so this is not a good sign. I hunt an area about...

Hunting results center part of SD Thanksgiving

Three of us returned last week from our second 5-day hunt in central SD. We hunted a 70 mi (north/south) by 30 mile (east/west) area in central part of state. We had three good dogs (labs) and one okay young dog (lab). Weather was mild 40-60 deg, low wind, no rain or snow. We hunted ditches...

Hunting results north of Pierre 2nd week

We (five of us) just got back yesterday from our first 5-day hunt. It was probably the hardest hunting we have had in 15 years in that area, aside from times when a blizzard has hit. Four of us got all of our birds and the 5th should have if he could have hit one of 5 that jumped up on the last...

Possession limits from 2 states-what's legal??

I have seen several threads on this and nothing consistent, and nothing from SD or NE. I plan to hunt pheasants after Christmas on a 7 day trip. The first two days will be in NE and I have a good chance of killing 6 birds. Then I travel to SD to hunt for 5 days, where I know I can/will kill...

Economic Impact from Pheasant Hunters in SD

A friend just sent this link to a report from SD GF&P on the economic impact from pheasant hunters in 2009. Pretty interesting information if you like that kind of stuff. Over $200 Million total was spent state-wide by 97,350 non-residents and 69,950 resident hunters. Residents spent $38.6...

Great Hunting north of Pierre near Gettysburg

My party of 4 just finished a 5-day hunt in the Gettysburg area (radius of 50 miles or so) and it was great. We didn't have the best of conditions--3 days of rain, and one day of heavy (50mph) wind--but it was still good. We saw A LOT of birds and it seemed like a lot of crops have been...

    Great hunting north of Pierre

Just got back from my first trip of the season and we had excellent hunting north of Pierre. We had to drive 14 hours on snow and ice-packed roads through Wyoming to get there, but it was worth it. Rain on the first day made the birds hard to find. We thought they were spending their time in...
