    Rem 105 CTi questions

Does anyone have any insights or options on the Remington CTi 105 shotguns? I see a used one in a local gun store for $600, it has an extended mag on it, not use if the normal caps/spring would fit it if I want to remove it...and are they just normal Rem Chokes? The pulls up like a a Rem...

Cold temps and feeding the birds

We are testing our cover/habiat now. Hope those birds found good roosting spots last night, -14° here, guessing it is even a bit colder in the Dakotas. We have our first real snow of the season on the ground now, just a couple inches. No wind, cold enough it is loose, not packed, birds can dig...

What's up with this "winter" weather?

59° outside currently. If the season was still open, it would be almost too warm in late January to run my GSP! Are the Dakotas unseasonably warm also today? You guys run thru January, right? Here is our global warming at work. I just looked at the 10-day forecast the "lowest" high temp is...

    Any members from NW"ish" Iowa?

I know Kevin is a SC guy and McFarmer is about an hour north...any other members in this part of the state? So many members here have nothing in their bio on their location, not even as vague as just a state even. I suppose they afraid of someone hot spotting their state. If the state was a...

Rating, review and recap of your '24-'25 Iowa season

My season was a bit abbreviated dealing with family issues again this year. I got out on 14 hunts, harvested (brought home) 36 birds. Lost more in the jungle CRP than I will admit too. I hunted our CRP 13 of those hunts which likely resulted in the birds getting very jumpy the last few weeks...

Our final weekend of season in Iowa

Well, it is our last weekend to pheasant hunt in Iowa. It is our coldest day of this season, I am not sure tomorrow will be much better. I am sitting here, the temps are not going to get much better, my dog is bugging me, so I guess I am going to go try it. I really have trouble with keeping...

    First birds of 2025

Gus and I were a good team today. I must shoot better when I am dry than when wet. I did have one get up, right when I had something in my eye (likely bluestem). I pulled-up and just couldn't see well, I shot, the bird was still going, I couldn't see well enough to try again, pulled the gun...

    How tough are these birds?

I just saw and stole this from a FB post...wow!

    Golden Hour Hunting???

Here is why I don't like (agree with) hunting "golden hour", deep in season. The birds, all the birds you kick-up, need to find a good roosting place as the darkness is setting in. Try hunting in the mornings during extreme cold weather, if you must hunt them in those conditions.

    5th weekend of season

Well, I got back out with one cousin today after not hunting at all last weekend. Another cousin was on his way and just was able to avoid an accident where a semi didn't stop at an intersection, my cousin saw him coming and got slowed down, but a vehicle coming the other direction got...

    Pheasant Breakfast Sausage

Last year KEO got me hooked into buying a meat grinder and trying a couple different ways to eat pheasants. The "pheasant-bacon-ranch" is a real good one. I do like breakfast sauage and I got a recipe from him for that also...I tweaked it a bit and had a blend that I really liked. Well, a...

    Vet's Day Weekend

Had a larger group today, 9 guys, we were able to finish around 11:00 with 3 short of everyone with a limit. Nice when everyone gets birds.

    Second weekend in Iowa

My second outing/second weekend, and darkest morning of the season (with the time change, tomorrow morning with be brightly lit). I was watching the TV and surfing the net, it was now after 8:00 and it was like Gus knew the time and was really getting annoyed with me. So, I get my boots on and...

    Iowa's opener is today.

Welcome '24-'25 pheasant opener. This will be the first season my father will not be hunting, I think this has tempered my enthusiasm. Taking a couple guys out for a friend this morning, the regular crew is fading. Post those hero pics Iowa hunters! Be safe everyone, looking forward to some...

Looks like I am not the only one that is dry....

I just saw this on the net, I think they could back the date up to August 7th and we wouldn't have .5" here. The dogs could really use some rain this week (Iowa opener is next Saturday)....it just happens that we have some chances, 30% one day, so they are saying there is a chance.

Getting older and I am starting to notice it.

I just replied to a thread here and it hit me. I turned 60 this year, I have a couple pains that just don't go away, my hand, arm and leg strength loss is noticeably. I made a remark about using a gun I know and trust. We will see how the season goes, but I might be joining the massing who...

Dog story in the last PF Journal

Did anyone read the story starting on page 30 of the summer 2024 Pheasants Forever Journal. We must have 2 memberships where I work as we received 2 copies of the Journal this month. The gals brought the extra one to me. I made the mistake of reading a bit of it last week when we were slow...

More acres available for public hunting in South Dakota

Here is a nice FB post about over 11,600 acres of new public access for hunting are now available in South Dakota. With that many acres there just might be one or two roosters hiding in there with special nose piercings, just waiting for A5 to saunter by.

2024 National Pheasant Fest in Sioux Fall, who is going?

March 1st-3rd. I believe they call this the largest upland bird hunting trade show in the country. Fun to walk through and BS with some of the venders and attendees. A good place to put hands on things you have been curious about. A lot of seminars on a variety of subjects, including public...

    Take-aways from this season

My season has ended, it was maybe not the best, but it was a good one. Here are a few take-aways from my experiences in Iowa from this season: *The mild weather...great for getting kids out and causal hunters seemed to be out all season, more than just the normal opening weekend or 2. The...
