    A sign of getting old.

Very early this morning, I wake to the worst cramp (charlie horse) I have ever had. I sometimes get somewhat painful cramps in my calf muscles at night, but this was about mid thigh, toward the inside and the pain was on a entire different level. I am a few hours short on my "myology degree"...

The food plots are getting hammered now.

It sounds like most everyone in the upper midwest has snow cover and more coming now. This is when the food plots you plant can really make a difference. It is pretty early for the birds to need to rely on them, but I hope they last the winter, I am doubtful they will. A few days of full sun...

While I was out hunting this morning.....

While I was out hunting this morning, my wife had a bird encounter. We live in-town, be it a small town, but several blocks into town. This morning she decided to open the bedroom window as it air seemed a bit "stale". Once opened, she hears a rooster crow. She looks out the window as a...

Nice morning to shake it up a bit.

I am having my cousins hunt next Sunday, so I decided to give the birds in our CRP a 2 week break prior to "The Rooster Round-Up". I decided to try a friend's waterways, he has 2 farms with some good cover. Once they are gone (both in their 80's) I am thinking those farms will be tiled-out and...

4th weekend of season and the temps are warmer than a typical opening day here.

Whoa, the temp is 48* already here in NW Iowa (supposed to be over 60* by noon). I hope the Dakotas aren't this warm too. I have a friend going with me this morning, we will get going right at 8:00 and trust we can be home before 11:00 (maybe 10:00). I have been sick (not covid) since last...

Looks like our first winter weather is coming

Here in NW Iowa, there are saying Saturday morning, cooler and a few inches of snow is what they are predicting now...after it slides thru South Dakota I am assuming. The older I get, the less I am feeling like fighting the weather, Maybe it will just be a little of nothing. Guessing it is...

Had a UFH member out this morning.

I think Kevin is the first UPH member I have had out for a pheasant hunt. I think we both had a good time, got a good work-out, saw several birds and actual shot some in our 2 hour outing. Bells, Sportdog collars and Remington shotguns, not sure how we even saw one after reading some posts here.

The darkest opening morning of the season

About 20 minutes until the season opens and it is pretty much pitch dark out. I might waste a bit of time before this morning's hunt. Rained a little last night, it should be a good morning!

Iowa hunters, how was your opener?

I saw plenty of birds, my shooting was sub-par, but with a few additional opportunities I had a limit in less than an hour. Heard some shooting from other hunters, so that was good. Just not many pheasant hunters around here these days. Personally the opener for me has gone from a big...

    Other food plots

If you have seen my posts and read of the struggles with food plots this past spring, here is a plot on our "home" farm. Not nearly the bird numbers here. This was only planted once and had a late application of 2-4D, no drops. The corn was higher that I could raise the booms. It made a...

Come on, no hero opener day pics posted yet???

Come on, get those roosters cleaned and put up a few pics! 2 weeks yet. I did get 4 boxes of shells loaded just now. Saw the shotgun was still where I left back in January. Tick-tock, tick-tock.

    How fast conditions change.

We had been very short on moisture in my pocket, but the last 3 weeks or so has changed this. Getting dumped on during the hatch, but I am guessing we will be just fine. On a positive note, the 3rd planting in the food plots is growing fast. Just need to get them sprayed, will try to do that...

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

I saw chicks yesterday and today in different places. My food plots are a disaster as the birds are eating the the seeds from the ground, corn and sorghum. I replanted for the last time today. A week ago I started spreading shelled corn inside a hedgerow about a quarter mile long that is...

Food plot prep work is beginning

Like the rest of the crop ground around, our food plots are starting to get attention. This past weekend, I took a bush-hog style mower to about 3 acres of old food plots. I am trying to pulverize the standing weeds and standing sorghum as our lightweight disk struggles with much trash. I...

    Rem 105 CTi questions

Does anyone have any insights or options on the Remington CTi 105 shotguns? I see a used one in a local gun store for $600, it has an extended mag on it, not use if the normal caps/spring would fit it if I want to remove it...and are they just normal Rem Chokes? The pulls up like a a Rem...

Cold temps and feeding the birds

We are testing our cover/habiat now. Hope those birds found good roosting spots last night, -14° here, guessing it is even a bit colder in the Dakotas. We have our first real snow of the season on the ground now, just a couple inches. No wind, cold enough it is loose, not packed, birds can dig...

What's up with this "winter" weather?

59° outside currently. If the season was still open, it would be almost too warm in late January to run my GSP! Are the Dakotas unseasonably warm also today? You guys run thru January, right? Here is our global warming at work. I just looked at the 10-day forecast the "lowest" high temp is...

    Any members from NW"ish" Iowa?

I know Kevin is a SC guy and McFarmer is about an hour north...any other members in this part of the state? So many members here have nothing in their bio on their location, not even as vague as just a state even. I suppose they afraid of someone hot spotting their state. If the state was a...
