    Grouse, season start, and snares

I’ve never had to go to a vet for a trapped dog, no injury happened. I did have two dogs go in this fall for barbed wire tears, one was $280.00, the other $200.00. I suppose if you had a dog in a foothold trap that was jumping around and carrying on it could hurt itself, not sure about that though.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

I’ve had a few dogs get caught in a foothold trap, not a big deal. One dog caught in a snare, she just sat down and waited for me to turn her loose. All sportsmen need to stick together, legal trapping is just as valid as legal hunting.

    2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

Been out a bit myself, had 2 roosters pointed on Friday that flushed before I could get there. Saturday had 4 finds, all hens with one point 4 birds. Sunday was tough, got soaked, only ran 2 dogs in the morning with no points and 3 wild flushes. Yesterday ran the old girl, lost her in the wind...

    2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

Walked a bunch today, saw just a few birds. Ran the pup first, had a nice find on a pair of hens. Later, she pointed in the farmyard that adjoins the public, a couple of squawking roosters flushed as I quietly snuck in and grabbed the pup. That was it for that spot, there were some guys out...

In your opinion, how many public land pheasants in the bag would make for a successful season?

It’s been chilly out there! Friday had 2 birds pointed, first one a hen after about an hour. Changed dogs, new spot, one rooster pointed and shot. Saturday morning was out for two hours, no birds pointed, 2 wild flushes on hens. Evening had the pup down, got three pointed, all hens. Pup did a...

In your opinion, how many public land pheasants in the bag would make for a successful season?

Out for an hour last night, no pheasants but did see a huge flock of robins down in the trees and brush along the stream. Out this morning for another hour or so, different area, again no birds pointed. I did see some otters, one was going up along a cut corn field, pretty neat. Then when I got...

In your opinion, how many public land pheasants in the bag would make for a successful season?

If you’re talking wild birds on public, a good day is to get 2 or 3 birds pointed. If you’re lucky one or two will be a rooster for you to shoot. Was out tonight for an hour, one rooster pointed that flushed too far for a shot. One other find on a hen, that was it. Pretty typical Wisconsin...

In your opinion, how many public land pheasants in the bag would make for a successful season?

I’d say 15 or so. About this time of year they’re pretty well shot out around here, but you can still get into a few if you walk a bit. Today I had just one rooster and 3 hens pointed. Found someone’s dead deer, little spike shot in the guts. Didn’t see anyone hunting around the area, maybe from...

Thanks for the report. I’m thinking about a trip down SW part of the state but hesitate after the last couple years.

    Must Haves?

Agreed. A better one is the tart cherry manhattan - 2 parts Makers Mark, 1 part Carpano Antica vermouth, 1 part Tattersall Sour Cherry, and a dropper full of Bittercube Cherry Bark Vanilla bitters. A local bartender came up with this one, quite tasty.

    Must Haves?

Northern Wisconsin that I’m familiar with it’s Manhattans, made with either Windsor or cheap brandy, cheap vermouth, and bright red Maraschino cherries!

Any other states allow this besides MN ??

SE MN, haven’t been in a few years, but they were there. Waterways through corn or beans, fence rows along crops or alfalfa.

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

I was out, didn’t see many birds either. Did get into three different broods that were very small, maybe grouse sized, no color yet. Didn’t see many people either, which was nice.
