    Winter 2022/23

I wouldn't say it's been the coldest or windiest winter (since that's pretty much a constant here in ND), but the length of it has been unusual. We're talking 4.5 months of solid snow cover since getting close to 20" of snow on Nov. 10. Luckily Jan & Feb were average to above for temps...

Do you shoot coyotes while pheasant hunting?

8 or 10 years ago I was hunting a little fold in a field walking along and saw a coyote on a hilltop about 1000 yards away. That thing meandered its way towards us, fixated on my lab. He got about 50 yards away until I let some lead fly. Shooting a couple (even probably a couple dozen) is...

    follow-up to huntable areas thread...

Gotta remember that even if the 'high' is 35 or 40, it's still probably below freezing 21 hours a day with as short as the daylight still is...

    Huntable Areas?!?!?

I saw Lake Andes reported 27 inches out of this storm and Plankinton 18. You hunted in the middle of that? You sir are a trooper!

    Recipes for Roosters

White Chili is my go-to with my pheasants: 6 breasts, cubed 1/2 cup onion, chopped Heat a tbsp or two of olive oil in your pot and brown pheasant & onion Add 14 oz. chicken broth, 1 can of chopped or diced green chiles, 1 tsp of garlic powder, 1 tsp of cumin, 1/2 tsp oregano, 1/4 tsp of...

    The End?

There was 2-4” yesterday which puts us around 50 for the last 5 weeks. So anytime it blows like it is today (35-45), it’s basically impossible to travel.

    The End?

Pretty insane out there since yesterday afternoon. Supposed to continue into tomorrow. Thankfully looks like a reprieve coming next week, sure hope that lasts several weeks!

    The End?

Gave it a shot yesterday just cuz I felt bad for my dog being cooped up for a week. Pretty extreme walking, legitimately thigh to waist high snow everywhere in the large cattail area I tried, not just the windblown sides, etc. Was hard for the dog to even work as the snow was fairly fluffy and...

    The End?

Plenty of springs out there too. Got wet a couple times just last weekend in cattails when a few miles away guys were driving pickups on a lake to ice fish.

    The End?

Reports I've seen for that area were 15-25 inches of snow. Ice should be fine since that area didn't have a lot of snow before this but now I think soft spots in cattails would be the least of your worries.

    The End?

Looking like a very rough winter for pheasants thus far. We had enough snow to make it tough going already, now a 3 day blizzard with 12-24" over most of the state. Most areas also had a glazing of freezing mist/rain prior to this snow. Been probably 10 years since I haven't hunted up til the...

    Moisture coming….

Some bumpy weather last night in SW ND. Didn't sound like anything too crazy. 2-3" of rain in Dickinson and around 2 in Bismarck.

    Leaving Dogs In Vehicle

5 hours is a pretty long hunt in ND - you'd be back to the truck around noon. Go hunt a pothole for a couple hours in the morning and/or evening and call it good. Your scenario reminded me of a story I heard a couple years ago: Pair of guys with a young shorthair went to hunt a pothole for a...

    Dog teeth cleaning?

Curious what it usually costs you all? Had it quoted on my lab a year or two ago and a couple places were over $400 if I remember correctly. Ended up traveling about a hundred miles to a vet friend of mine who did it for around 150.

    Migration Vacation

You'd probably want to be south of I94 and east of the MO river if looking to do both.

    ND Info

12 week season (15 if you count the september part of grouse/partridge). Try to run out after work once or twice a week + some long weekends. Not too hard when you can hunt within 20 minutes of your house.

    ND Info

Sharptails are pretty much anywhere in the state that has decent habitat (which is usually shorter grass/cover than pheasants like), but in my experience are tough to target by the time pheasant season opens (very flighty). Have never really hunted around the Mott/far SW area with its...
