    The Season so Far

Skunked for the first time this season on Sunday. Rainy in the morning, hardly any wind, birds were flushing wild. Put up 3 hens, 2 more flushed pretty wild, and one rooster (I think) flushed super wild, at least 100 yards away. Only saw deer hunters around this time, we seem to be one of the...

    The Season so Far

Hi everyone, I’d like to add a little action to the Michigan forum. I meant to start when the season started but…I didn’t. Also forgot to take pictures but I’ll give some brief reports of the first three weekends. Wild birds only on public land in the thumb. Opening day - 5 of us took 4...

If you don’t do many PLOTS, are you saying you find a fair amount of unposted private land? Or do you focus on public land? I did see a little video from ND Game and Fish about the pheasant hatch this year, it sounded very promising. We had a toss up between Kansas and ND and it didn’t look like...

This is good to hear. Michigan has been really wet this summer too. Hopefully not too wet for the birds. And like someone else mentioned, I think I can download ON X maps so I won’t need great cell service. Maybe I’ll pick up a physical copy of the PLOTS guide just in case

This is very encouraging to hear. I’m no stranger to bars although I can’t say I’ve been to a gas station bar. I thought the gas station/gun store/convenience store I stop at at home was special. We’re gonna check out the local places and see what happens. Thanks for the input!

Thank you for the input. Do you say it wouldn’t be worth while because of so much hunting pressure? And it sounds like you mean ND altogether, not just this area in particular?

Alright that’s good to know for sure. I figured it would be cold, didn’t expect that much snow by then. But I love a snowy bird hunt. Like you said, it’ll be a good time no matter what

A 6 pack is definitely more my style. My style hasn’t done me any good getting onto private land in Michigan though, unfortunately. I appreciate the comment regarding habitat in that area, that gives me something to think about

Thank you for that; I did read up on all the laws and how the postings work. I didn’t really think about there being a lack of habitat I suppose. That’s something I’ll have to keep in mind. I’d really prefer to avoid paying for access, we’re not exactly a wealthy group haha. Sure would stink to...

Yes, I’ve been using ON X and have been reading up on the ND laws and stuff. It can either be physically posted or electronically posted. I’ve looked at the PLOTS guide and came to the same conclusion as you. ON X makes it easy!

Will do, thanks for the heads up. I’ll keep my eyes peeled and do a little more research I figured I’d keep my eyes open for unposted private land while we are swinging by the PLOTS parcels I have pinned. I didn’t think we’d have much luck getting access, mostly based on my experiences trying...

Gonna be mid-November, probably the week before thanksgiving. Which is a bummer with gun season of course. But we deal with lots of deer hunters on public land in Michigan so we’re used to that at least. All the public land we hunt gets pounded for birds too so we’re used to that as well. Pay to...

I wish we could swing some pay hunting but I honestly don’t think we can afford it. Looks like the lowest priced one I could find is $500 a day per guy. Maybe something to think about for next year We do public land only in Michigan. So we’re used to a fraction of the bird numbers and probably...

Hi Folks, My father, buddy and I are planning a trip to ND in November for some upland hunting. Pheasants are the priority but I think it’d be really cool to run into some huns and some sharpies. From my research I think I might be on to a decent area to give it a whirl. I’m looking in the...

    Hello from Michigan

I really like that side of the state, I do a bit of work over there and always enjoy it. That is the area of Kansas I’ve considered, the Hill City area. I will have to look into South Dakota more. I almost wrote it off completely just because it seems like we’d be competing with a lot of people...
