Which type of public access lands do you target?

I would decide what town or towns you want to stay in. Then get on computer with South Dakota public atlas map in one window and have google earth on another. Look at each area, you be able to tell if it has water, cover and agriculture around. It will help limit a lot with unnecessary driving...

    Hunting motivation

Mine for sure. I was in fear of missing a give me shot. I spend 5 days watching him running at the hip of my older dog. I think he bump 3 roosters on that trip, that the another dog pointed. You never know what they're go to point, my older dog first point was skunk that sprayed my chessie (that...

    Hunting motivation

For me it's about the dogs. There nothing more exciting then watching a dog running at full speed and stopping on dime, tail raised, paw up, eyes focus on spot, all saying it's right there. More than likely it'll be a hen but we're one bird closer to rooster. Last year I hunted with 8 year old...

Bad News Knee - Now the Good News!

I have the cortisone shots 2 or 3 times a year, they make you feel good for a month or two. Cortisone shots become less effective as time goes on. I have had some kind lubricant made with chicken cartilage, I feel no benefit from it. I'm going to get the knee replace in March next year.

Bad News Knee - Now the Good News!

I had arthroscopic surgery 10 years ago to clean-up the knee and remove bone spurs the size of nickel. I was able to walk out right after the surgery, the next day my knee swelled up unable to walk, 2 days later I was pretty much normal. Had some tenderness walking up and down stairs that never...

Bird flu in wild pheasant populations

I have a hard time believing this disease is transfer by wild waterfowl. Most these poultry farms are raise in enclose buildings. My feelings about this is the living conditions of the birds. There way too many birds in building, poor ventilation and filth. With labor shortages, I bet it's hard...

    One item for the birds

The real problem with these organizations only spend small percentage go to cause, 90 percent of money goes to fundraising and administration. The money that your group raises, goes to another state to be spend. I would prefer not to get magazine or vest, I like that money use for habitat. I...

    Managing for Huns?

I see them a lot in Saskatchewan, it seems they are always around old abandon homesteads and hedgerows next to wheat fields. Also see them year after at the same places, could name the coveys according to location where I see them.

    2021 RINGNECK OUTLOOK

Maybe South Dakota doesn't want freelancers. There new business strategy is to push you to pay play program. That way you spend $1500 to hunt for 3 days, instead of $750.00 for 5 day hunt.

    pheasant caller

I have used one as locator, blow it and will usually let know if you wasting your time. I have had 4 or 5 roosters response in one field. It will give you idea where they are holding up and opportunity to plan your strategy.

Is SD shooting itself in the foot?

Why not get volunteers to drive the routes and paid them .65 cent a mile. 110 routes @ 30 miles run 4 times comes out to about $8580 dollars. In Utah they use volunteers for spraying weeds at Wildlife manager areas, Urban goose round-up, reseeding deer winter range, buffalo round-up on antelope...

    New Hunter

Your dog is new to the sport too. I would buy pen raised birds and plant them for him to find. Then in September I would take dog and run in areas that should hold birds. The more you work dog the better he'll become. You will also learn where the birds like to hang out.
