    Hunting With A Backpack

Agree, the majority of it is universal. About the only "specific" items I carry for me are 2 C.A.T. tourniquets.....too big to be used on the dog. But I do carry 1 TacMed K9 tourniquet for him. I also have 4 packets of QuikClot combat gauze (non heat generating variation). Again, the items...

    Hunting With A Backpack

The gear I/we carry has nothing to do with "I'm only hunting birds" or such. It's for emergencies, which can happen anytime, anyplace to anyone. It's stuff that could save my life or my dog's life.....it could also be stuff that saves "your" life or "your" dog's life if I'd come across "you" and...

    Hunting With A Backpack

I do have OnX and use that for my tracks, sharing location and such with wife or who I leave my hunt/hike plan with. I also carry 2 cell phones, one is for work and the location/find my phone app is always active through my IT department. Paracord is a good idea, definitely something to add for...

    Hunting With A Backpack

I use the Tenzing BV16 vest.....packs alot of gear. I always like to be prepared since I hunt alone often. I typically carry first aid for both canine and human....from simple needs up to needs to stop bleeding from trauma/gun shots. I also carry protein bars, 3 different means of fire starting...

Unpopular opinion - dog caught a hen

I think we're beating a dead horse......excuse me, beating a dead hen at this point in the thread! 😆

    Grouse report

Surprisingly, walking in the snow was pretty noisy Monday and Tuesday with how cold it was, every step made noise. Only was a dusting, maybe 3/4ths of an inch.

    Grouse report

Bumped enough birds to keep me and the dog interested. Nothing to show for it however. With the cold the first two days, only hunted the warmest couple hours. Birds were in the thick stuff and not cooperating with my flight plans for them. LOL! Today with the warmup, they were out and about...

Thank god I have a great wife!

Same here. My wife is an avid outdoors woman. She enjoys hunting and fishing as well. Spring turkey and bowhunting are her times, as well as kayaking and snowmobiling. Heck she shot a bull moose in Newfoundland years back with her bow! She encourages time in the outdoors, or whatever one's...

    Grouse report

Headed up the Phillips-Park Falls area next this coming week for a couple days.....any recent reports on numbers? Was up in the beginning of October, but had to cut trip short after a couple hours and head home for work. Missed 2 and got 1 in about 3 hours. Thanks for any info.

    Funny Looks??

Funny looks for sure! And at times even a bit of an attitude when I miss! My previous lab would actually work "away from" a hunter that would miss a couple, including me.....too funny!!

    Best Dogs

I've been blessed with two great labs, both chocolate, both from great pedigrees.....Candlewood Kennel here in Wisconsin lines. Both from litters bred from friends. Drake 2002-2012....diabetic by age 5, bone cancer in his jaw by age 10 cut his life short....that took alot out of me.....couldn't...

    britton/hecla area

Always good to be away from the grind and out enjoying time in the outdoors. Overall, trip was a success....no one got hurt, 1 minor barbed wire incident with my lab, good banter, cold beer and delicious Old Fashions.....other than that.....sigh. BIL and I put 8 birds in the bag between us 2...

    britton/hecla area

I'm an "out of stater", this is my 4th year staying in Hecla I believe....and I would agree on the increase in hunters each year around this area.

3 guys, 4 dogs…..2 labs and 2 pointers. We have seen/flushed/had shots at birds on every property we hunted thus far but one. These vary from CREP, GPA, and WPA areas. What we are finding is not “concentrations” of birds, they are sporadic, so you have to make it count. It’s one here, one there...

Yesterday…..slow. Today, pushed west….saw birds, but even into the wind, birds were flushing 100 to 150 yards out. More hens than roosters.

Seen plenty of birds today....brother-in-law and I, our 2 labs. Ended up with 3, but twice we pulled on the same bird from double flushes. Throw in 1 clean miss and 2 double flushes where never a shot was fired.....should of, could of been done by 1ish. All on CREP land.
