    Removing Nest Predators

Good luck with it, whatever you do. I've contemplated nest predator trapping/elimination on our stuff, but never really done anything about it. We're about 70-80 miles WNW of your stuff, and it sounds like we both live in Wichita. If anyone ever asked me for permission to trap, I'd give a...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Good to see the moisture in those parts of the country, but most of it is still D1 or worse... I wish Kansas would get a little more of it...

    Pheasant Fest

Once in KC that I can recall. I planned to go to that one, but something came up and I didn't make it. If Sioux Falls has the facilities, I would bet Wichita does. If it came back to KC or if it came to Wichita I'd probably try to go.

    Boot Cleaner & Leather Conditioner

This picture is the 7", mine are the 9". I couldn't find the 9" on the website, maybe they've discontinued them. The stitching on the side started to fail after the first full season and might be a fit issue. While buying running shoes, I've had my feet laser measured. It seems my feet are...

    Boot Cleaner & Leather Conditioner

I bought a new pair of Irish Setter wingshooters in Dec of 2020 and started using Obenaufs on them. The leather has held up really well, the stitching not so much. I think it will be the stitching that drives replacement, which is likely to be much sooner than I'd hoped. I chose Obenaufs...

Boss Unmuzzled Bismuth load dissection and pattern performance for pheasants

I bought a couple boxes for my trip to SD last year. I only used them where I couldn't shoot lead. However, in my very limited set of data, they performed very well. I'll use them again next year where non-tox is required.

    10 Day Hunting Trip

I'll split into two 5 day trips. ND in October for huns, pheasants, sharpies (in that order). Then AZ/NM for desert quail in late January/October. It's not bucket list, but one day of conservation-order light goose hunting would be fun, if I was on the "X". But I would pick either of the...

    Reports

I would say that just about all of my day-trip hunting is central Kansas.

    Asking permission

Yes it helps to have some connections in the area, and yes, many producers are friends, but they are also competitors to some degree. They compete for buying land and for tenancy on land owned by others. I even saw two guys go from frenemies to outward hostility over a "right of first refusal"...

One bird on Sunday hunting only a few hours because of the cold. I wonder why this young rooster decided to hold this late into the seaosn. We hunted some private that hadn't been touched since the week before thanksgiving. In addition to the one rooster, we a couple series of...

Pictures of your habitat, projects, food plots, etc.

I'd welcome anyone to cut firewood or fenceposts. In addition to this 3.5 acres, there's two other little woodlots that have even denser tree cover. The whole stretch appears below. Don't know that I've seen many locust fenceposts, though. Almost all wood fence posts in this area are osage...

    What else do you hunt?

Pheasants and quail are my passion. I hunt deer a little, really only when one of my sons wants to go. I hunted squirrel for the same reason (son wanted to go) this year for the first time in decades. I've done some waterfowling over the years, but none this year or last and I don't really...

Pictures of your habitat, projects, food plots, etc.

Great looking habitat! Shows what can be accomplished. This quarter is where most of my efforts are focused: Unfortunately, much of my planned work this year is "defensive". Still working on removing unwanted trees, mostly locust and cedar from the finger draw running southeast from the...

Making one last run at it.

One last day for me on Sunday. I booked something else on Saturday and now I wish I could switch them. Sunday looks COLD (for Kansas)

Do you shoot coyotes while pheasant hunting?

That's a lot of fur! I'd welcome a trapper to work our land once bird season was over, but I'm not sure it would pay. Of course with everything we hear about fur prices, I'm not sure it pays anywhere. Maybe if your line is really productive and really close to your home.

Do you shoot coyotes while pheasant hunting?

Coyotes get a pass, primarily for safety but also because I'm hoping they'll eat their fill of raccoons, possums, skunks, etc. Coyotes will certainly eat pheasants and quail, they're not very good bird hunters. My dogs have pointed two of them this year. The dogs get a different sort of look...

    Reports

Hunted in the snow yesterday, hoping that it would provide an "assist" in getting close. Normally the first day after the snow is pretty good, but not this time. Some combination of weather conditions while it fell and the overnight cool down made for crunchy snow on the first day after the...

    Snow hunting

Some of my best hunts have been in fresh snow. It's much easier to get close to them.

    Vintage/older Over Unders

Beretta BL-1, BL-2, BL-3, and BL-4 were pretty good guns too, as long as you stay away from the "speed trigger". I walked away from a BL-2 or a BL-3 (can't remember) at the Scheels in Omaha that was priced well under $500. I didn't know anything about the model.

    Reports

We headed to the NC part of the state for a two-day trip. We probably hunted 9 different WIHA spots over the two days in probably 5 different counties. Maybe half of them held some birds. Killed 1 pheasant. Missed chances at 1 other rooster and a couple of quail.
