    Scale Quail

We tried 2 days last year and got blanked. We got to the northeast edge of the CNG in the late morning on our first day. Our first walk was as much about stretching legs and letting the dogs air out as it was hunting. We made a few other walks that day and kicked up one pheasant. So clearly...

It's dogless hunters for the most part. Inexperience and lack of engagement (can't think of a better word for it). They're just walking... One foot in front of the other... Mind wandering... It's the sound of a flush, or a word from someone about a dog acting "birdy" or going on point, that...

One of my many frustrations from hunting in bigger groups has to do with plum thickets or small areas of something different--kochia, smartweed, sunflower, ragweed, illinois bundleflower, horsetail, tumbleweed, etc. I have a compulsion to walk around them or through them if they are anywhere...

I don't boot my dogs, but they hunt sandy stuff all the time. I also apply tuf-foot nearly daily for about 2 weeks before the season starts. They're also vizslas so there's not a lot of hair around their feet to pick up stuff. Even so I still pull out sand burs once in a while. My buddy has...

    Kansas First-timer

I think most of this is pretty well documented here. If you pull up to WIHA and there's a truck there, drive on. There are more. In fact, I would check all the road frontage of the tract for vehicles. That's the biggest thing. You might see some other hunters, but this is the 3rd weekend of...

Box turtles. Multiple times this year while Prairie Chicken hunting.

    Rain

Pretty good for us. We hunt a sandier part of the state, so while there were big puddles in spots there was no risk of getting stuck as long as you stayed on the roads. 6 of us killed 11 by 1:00 on Saturday. Mixture of private and WIHA. We quit then because it was getting warm and to save...

    Roadside Survey is Out

The forecast can be summed up like this, "it's better, and in some areas, a lot better." You have to read to pretty close to see where it also says, "but it's still not very good." I'm going anyway. Can't drive to SD every weekend.

    2024 youth hunt

Sounds like a great time! I miss having kids young enough for youth seasons.

any advice on how to scout WIHI remotely using technology?

As for apps, I use them all. I do way too much internet scouting from my desk with two monitors. I'll keep OnX, KDWP, and Google earth all open, and often I have the paper maps also at hand. All these apps seem to have different base images, and google earth pro has imagery going back for...

    Meindel Boots

I bought some Meindls at the beginning of last season--Comfortfit Hunter Uninsulated. I expected them to need a little break-in and they did. I'm very happy with them after a season (20 days, give or take). They run a little wide for my foot, but that is consistent with the way they are...

Agreed. "Pockets" can be pretty small. Like maybe a handful of sections. Not even close to a whole county.

    Cardio Tip

Ditto this. I took mine for the first actual hunting outing on Saturday. Their cardio and stamina seemed to be fine, but both came up with pad issues. It was a good reminder to start the Tuf Foot regimen once the pads heal.

    Forecast

In one sense it doesn't matter: I'm going to hunt regardless. In another sense it matters some: it helps set expectations and perhaps nudge me to make a January over-night trip to one region of the state or another.

    Franchi 48 al

AKP has it right with respect to proper ring placement and process for re-installing. I have a 30 year old 20 gauge with a very short barrel that has seen very little use. I bought it for my wife early in our marriage and she never caught the bug like I hoped she would. Anyway, 10 years ago I...

    Quail

You can try Albert Barr at 316-200-2183. I bought some chukar from him a couple of years ago. I think he also had quail at the time. He's near Bentley.

Solar Farms = Habitat Destruction ?

Good to know! I've always avoided spots with windmills in the vicinity. There's plenty of info out there saying that chickens avoid areas with trees, homes, and other manmade structures breaking up the horizon. Guess that's wrong or for some reason windmills are not a problem. In my...
