    MN report

You aren't kidding. Will post my report later, but it was darn windy. Over 40 mph gusts. 34 mph average when I checked a couple times. 13 below zero windchill when I got back to the vehicle at sunset. 16 below with the gusts. There were times when I had to lean into the wind to stay...

    Let's talk cattail strategies

I'll echo to be careful. I walked inside cattails last Saturday, but avoided any large patches of frozen water and did not venture out to the middle water. Having said that, the middle water, after another week of cold temps can often be safer than cattails. Warm spots in cattails, out near...

    Late Season Hunt

I am sure there are dumps out there, whether motel or hotel. I've stayed at some chain hotels that have gone down the tube over the years (has people living there, drug trade, etc). The two motels I have stayed at multiple times in NE and NC SD are family run, clean, have game cleaning...

    Late Season Hunt

It looks like it has a new name, West Side Lodging, and is priced out of what most of us would pay.

    Late Season Hunt

I have found them in NE and EC, but they seem to be endangered in NC for some reason.

    Late Season Hunt

That's not too bad. Better than $100+ per night for a hotel, where you have to lug stuff a greater distance between the room and the vehicle.

    Late Season Hunt

Yeah, they would be great for multiple people. If it was just one weekend, it wouldn't matter as much, but I hunt 3-5 days every week in SD every January, so it adds up.

    Late Season Hunt

Are they in the $50-$60 range, like the motels?

    Late Season Hunt

I have been wondering the same. Any motels (where you drive up to your door) type arrangements near the aberdeen area?

    MN report

I am fond of some good natured feather ruffling. 🦅🐓

    MN report

They were in no danger of not flying away, unfortunately. Just some ruffled feathers that they recovered from, as far as I could see. Either that, or they were just dodging my pellets and changed flight patterns briefly. :-)

    MN report

Hit one spot in SW and one in SC today. As was mentioned above, enough ice that I risked cattail edges in places. Saw very few birds. 3 hens and a rooster in standing corn on a WMA (rooster was a ways away before I saw him). Saw 6 hens and 2 roosters at another wma. All the birds there...

    MN report

Good question. This is my least favorite time of the season. Cold enough for them to get into cattails with a skim of ice. Not cold long enough for me to go in. I will be out tomorrow too.

In your opinion, how many public land pheasants in the bag would make for a successful season?

Fun. One of the benefits of pheasant hunting, covering so much ground and hunting different locations, is all the other wildlife we get to see.

China? 😉 They are something else. Miniature dinosaurs.

North Central South Dakota Report 11/20 - 11/24

That sounds like an exciting end of day hunt! Congratulations! Those birds curving in the wind are something else. Which state? You may have had enough dogs to find birds. 👏

Maybe you are just that good? Private land does change the equation a bit.
