    Lab guys sorry but....

Does anyone run a GPS on lab/flushers. I was curious about actual miles done. Here was my average miles/day from 2021 GPS tracked 13 days total. (I moved in 2022 so didn't do nearly as much pheasant). Pretty much what I always suspected. 8 miles an average and the dogs do 2x what I do. Me 8.4...

I like data so I made a poll to see where people fall for this discussion. https://forum.ultimatepheasanthunting.com/threads/pointer-vs-flusher-poll.26894/

    Pointer vs Flusher Poll

At the risk of blowing up another thread, I was curious on how many people prefer which type. But specifically want those who have had experience owning both. None of this "my buddies sister in-law's dog was bad so those dogs suck".

    Lab guys sorry but....

Just realized my wording was poor on that. I meant if a person wanted a dog and they wanted to hunt 1-2 days a week. I would absolutely suggest them getting a lab. They are amazing family dogs. And that quality also makes them a good hunting dog. If a person enjoys a flushing dog for upland...

    After season shell blowout

As someone who just got into reloading I need to point out that no one in the history of the hobby has ever saved money by switching to reloading. Best case they might shoot more for the same money (not a bad problem). But more likely you buy more than you need so you make more than you need and...

    Lab guys sorry but....

The lab has been the most popular breed in America. Which makes it the most compared too. I don't think anyone on here is directly saying labs are bad. Just that they prefer pointers/versatiles for their hunting. But if you hunt 1-2 days a year, a lab is probably your best choice.

    After season shell blowout

A big reason I'm trying really hard to find the shell or reload that I truly like. So then I can ammo hoard for the simple fact that inflation is ridiculous and will probably not come down in the near future. Just need to be sure on things so I don't have 50 boxes of something and then later...

Pointing to far/ not moving in on running birds.

I think your expectations aren't fully realistic. Pinning a pheasant at the feet is a very hard challenge. Some dogs might be able to pull it off but I would much rather a dog points 70 yards away from the bird than one trying to get up as close as it can only to bump them. If the dog isn't...

    Lab guys sorry but....

Versatile in dogs just means pointing, retrieving (water/land), and tracking. That's it. it doesn't mean your dog that isn't a versatile breed can't be versatile to you or even as good as the versatile breeds in those category. But you can't blindly pick any dog and have it easy do all three...

    Lab guys sorry but....

I can't speak for him, but my dogs will flush on a release command. I hunt a lot solo so being able to get in a shooting position and letting the dogs do the flush helps a ton. I don't believe it make them that much worse on pointing. They aren't one trick dogs.

    How the Birds learn?

I'm not sure I can explain it great but it's the same way as all animals. Learning by association. If every time a car door slams and then 20 mins later something comes pushing through, they learn that car door equals disturbance. Same thing for paths. If everytime they sit in a spot and they...

    Lab guys sorry but....

Answers might be all over the board but I'll answer for me and my dogs. I actually hunt pheasants the least now and only had my pointers about 3 years before moving away. Grew up hunting behind a lab for 15 years. Most birds are flushed 50 yards in front of the dog. You could say these are...

Pointing to far/ not moving in on running birds.

Off topic but I'm curious about this. Did you mean you won't hunt behind a pointer again? Or those 3 breeds? I mean making a judgement about a breed based on a single dog isn't smart. As for OP I think we do need to know how far is too far for you. Are you not able to walk up and flush the...

    Lab guys sorry but....

I think it's mostly all in good fun. But it can be a heated topic. Flushing vs pointing is very different hunt styles and everyone is going to think their method is best, because if they didn't, they really should switch. I would be curious on how many people have owned both types and which way...

    Favorite steel

That's definitely the cheapest you can find for commercial bismuth. I like kent's steel and Joes dissection looks okay for the Kent bismuth so I say go for it.

    Lab guys sorry but....

I'll be honest, the advanced notice doesn't help as much as we want to believe. My dogs will be pointing and I'm still surprised at the flush. I think it's just because of the excitement of a flush no matter what.

    Lab guys sorry but....

And don't get me wrong I'm not really saying it's wrong to have a pointer that is closer or farther. For me I have one dog that ranges 40-70 yards typically and the other is 50-150. It ends up being awesome since I get action close by with one dog and some good finding and points done by the far...

    Lab guys sorry but....

I would challenge this a bit. Mostly because I noticed that I would make the same assumption a lot of time. It always seemed like birds don't hold long on a point, but so many of the times we are noting that when we are close by. I've heard it elsewhere too that it really is the hunters presence...

    Lab guys sorry but....

I don't think that had anything to do with range but the dog wasn't used to the birds. If your dog is at 50 yards and bumping birds, you're still not going to be able to shoot it as that's a 60+ yard shot each time.

    Lab guys sorry but....

Exactly, in front of you is almost pointless because you were going to be walking into that anyways. My dogs typical pattern is 70-150 yards swings to the side and then when they come back they are only 30 yards in front of me. It changes if they are following scent though and then might be 100...
