Upland strap vest you can load birds in

I'm running Chief Upland, but I honestly feel it's overkill if just doing pheasant hunting. It's great for mountain and prairie hunting where you'll be out for half or more of the day. I love the adjustability of it so you can truly get all the pockets in the exact place you want them to be. It...

    Ammo prices

Compared to when? I feel like ammo price has always been a big topic and it's never about a drop in cost. Which makes me suspect that ammo keeps up with inflation, but no ones wages does. I mean 2 years ago we had 9% inflation which is a ton. And then there's the issue of seasonally. Massive...

    Camo

I noticed this on blue grouse this year. Normally I archery hunt elk/deer (camo) and always took blue grouse whenever possible, they truly seemed like dumb animals as you could miss a bow shot over their head and they might not move. But this year I went rifle hunting instead which means full...

    Pudelpointer and Drahthaar comparisons please

I'll add in to the mix that I have 2 GWPs (so not DD standard) but my younger one is very much like the PP being described. Very fast paced dog but much softer and less grit. She is decent at retrieving and has been great at finding birds buried in brush. My older is extremely methodical and...

    Shed hunting

I "shed hunt" with my dogs just for a reason to let them exercise and essentially have puppy walks where I don't do any commands or expectations. I think overall it's really good for them. Although I haven't trained them to actually find the sheds, from what I hear its much more them finding...

    E-COLLAR

What's your needs and price range? It's honestly hard to beat the alpha 300 or 550 pro depending if you need better tracking or better training. Can then pair it with a garmin watch to hunt without looking at the controller. But it's pricey, that's for sure.

    Mild weather hunting

I was able to add in the "points", they are the bolded sections. But it's honestly pretty garbled data, unless you have the classic 2 minute long point while you walk over, most of them don't really show much info beyond them having stayed in the same spot for a few seconds. This specific hunt...

    Mild weather hunting

I'll think about adding points onto it. But flushes would have to be manually added. And I don't think there's any actionable items that would come out of the info. So it's not really worth that effort of checking. More of just a cool thing to see.

    Mild weather hunting

This thread made me wonder how far my pointers actually go. So I made a script to analyze my last GPS track for a quail hunt. Black line is one dog and blue is the other. Not sure what to do with this info but hey cool graph.

    Chasing

Have you shot the quail but not the pigeons? That would quickly change their attitude towards the birds.

    Ground swatting

In regards to the safety aspect, do people think rabbit hunting isn't safe? Or do they only shoot non running rabbit? I haven't had much opportunity to ground shoot pheasants but things like Ptarmigan, desert quail, or grouse end up occasionally being shot on the ground when they refuse to...

    Mild weather hunting

Being quiet is a big one for this. The birds are fully willing to move around in the warmer weather and being educated by the pressure means they start moving when those car doors shut. Avoid shouting to your partners and the dog. It won't guarantee birds but it does have a good effect.

    Losing confidence in dog

I disagree with this. A good trainer should know how to approach different types of dogs to keep them from feeling abandoned. My dog definitely loved the training because it meant he chased birds every single day, which is not something most people can provide. And if you do have a specific...

    Losing confidence in dog

This is certainly a post with too much to unpack for any real help. First season dog are going to bump and miss birds, but that doesn't mean there can't be other problems going on too. What is your own experience level with hunting birds? If it's your first bird dog then there's a good chance...

    How to age a pheasant

I imagine they stop growing as they are fully mature. And differences are just genetic. Otherwise that 20 year captive pheasant would have like 3 inch spurs.

    Uncommon bird dogs

I thought he was talking about his cousin.

    Using wind

Just hunt for 42 days straight without stopping and you'll be 8 years ahead of everyone else.

Experiences going from one bird dog to two?

You should at least be recalling and telling them no when they try. Otherwise you are enabling them. A good training session which I know you don't like doing, is to throw a bumper while making each one wait for their own turn. They learn that not every retrieve is for them. Which helps in...

Experiences going from one bird dog to two?

This is why we have entitled brats in the world. Their parents don't stop them from stealing other kids toys because they don't want their precious child to have hurt feelings. A well breed retriever wants to retrieve, you don't need to let it gets it's way just to encourage it. Not to mention...

    Bird limits

I wonder if this is a big thing they do all the time. Normally they clarify the laws if it is an issue. From Colorado regulations our daily limit just says "DAILY BAG LIMIT: maximum number of wildlife you can take in a day, including any eaten or donated during the day they're taken." So the...
