    Boss shotgun ammunition

Regarding the OP, about 4 years ago, I purchased 2 boxes of Boss 2 3/4" 12 gauge 1 1/4 oz #6 copper plated bismuth with a stated velocity of 1350 fps. I shot some pheasants with it through a modified choke and it worked well. I also shot some through a full choke on a turkey target to see if...

    Brine a pheasant

I cannot specify an amount. I would simply mix a cup of salt with a cup of brown sugar, add black pepper as you see fit. Rub on the meat. Place the meat in a plastic or ceramic container in the fridge overnight. Place the extra brine in a ziplock or Tupperware container for later use.

    Boss shotgun ammunition

I have to admit that you have a valid point here. Hunters using 5 & 6 steel for pheasants are using undersized shot for the job, and are likely losing downed birds. Unfortunately this error is exacerbated by manufacturers such as Kent. https://kentcartridge.com/shotshell/upland-fasteel Their...

    Brine a pheasant

I think for most meats, a dry brine is best. A simple dry brine of 1/2 salt, with 1/2 brown sugar and some black pepper works very well. Rub the mixture on the meat and place in the refrigerator overnight. The meat absorbs the salt and sugar. The pepper deposits on the surface. The next...

    Ear protection while bird hunting

I have had these now for two seasons. I have hearing loss and significant tinnitus. I am trying to preserve what hearing I have. I have tried several electronic ear muffs. While they seem to work fine in a duck blind. The wind noise on the prairie is awful. The only hearing protection that...

    Pheasant

Could it be one of the birds you shot and did not retrieve this past season?

    Steel/bismuth for pheasants

The following is from the article linked in post #23. It is well worth a full read. Anatomical Challenges Necropsies of pheasants taken in the test discovered that the back end of a pheasant presents two obstacles a charge of shot must overcome to produce a clean kill. Inside the body...

    Steel/bismuth for pheasants

In my experience that 40 yards is a very long shot in most pheasant covers. A going away shot at a rooster at that distance or greater is often the mechanism for a lost bird At distances less to 35 yards and change, both steel and bismuth (properly sized and choked as stated by others above)...

I must admit that it is very difficult to argue with that kind of logic... because it is not logic.

    Boss shotgun ammunition

    That is the popular myth.

    Boss shotgun ammunition

Some pheasants in South Dakota do ingest spent lead shot. That has been established. Sport Lead Free's statement on this matter is not a false statement. https://www.thepublicopinion.com/story/news/local/2012/06/09/gfp-study-reveals-game-birds-ingest-lead-pellets-shot-by-hunters/46389525/...

    Boss shotgun ammunition

Thank you for the reply. I have my doubts that spent lead shot is significant factor in most game bird mortality. The fact you have not found any shot in the crops of the birds that you have cleaned is not surprising or even significant. When the studies were conducted on waterfowl...

What is the point of your argument here?

    Boss shotgun ammunition

Knowing that lead is a neurotoxin and choosing not to use it to harvest the game that I eat and feed my family is not hypocrisy. I have been treated for pernicious anemia and have been diagnosed will elevated blood lead levels. I have both under control now, and want to keep it that way...

    Boss shotgun ammunition

I have been using nontoxic shot both steel and bismuth now for several years. It makes no sense to me to inject a known neurotoxin into the food that I eat and feed to my family when a nontoxic alternative is readily available. That point was reinforced recently when grinding pheasant meat...

    Does shot string matter?

Many of us were probably told the myth that swinging a gun can elongate a shot string.

    Does shot string matter?

This video reinforces what some are saying on this thread. Note that you can see at about 1 minute that the shot at the tail end of the shot string (slower shot) is the shot at the outer edge of a pattern. Two observations: 1. Your pattern is much more important than the shot string. 2...

What choke is in your gun?

The Hevi Shot was clearly defective. Hevi Shot requested that I return the remaining ammo last year. The sent me fair financial compensation. I suspect the issue this year was the cold affecting the mechanical functioning of the Browning Auto-5 along with the cold affecting propellant...

    My lost birds 2023

I think some stone dead pheasants can be difficult to find in certain covers. Two observations on shooting pheasants. 1. I think many going away birds are shot through a wing. Our eyes are naturally drawn to the fastest moving object in our field of view. A bird with a broken wing but...

What choke is in your gun?

Last season, 16 gauge Hevi Shot bismuth caused several bloopers and squibs (wad stuck in the barrel) during a late season hunt in 5 degree weather. Those shells were kept inside a house the night before. Two weekends ago, another hunter using 16 gauge Kent bismuth failed to cycle a Browning...
