    Bird shooting lesson learned

I did something like that today. My dog flushed a beautiful, full color rooster. I missed it with two layup shots. All I can remember is the bird's long tail waving in the wind.

    Bird shooting lesson learned

I think that it is natural for our eyes to focus on the fastest moving objects in our field of vision. On a flushing pheasant that would be the wings. Many wounded birds are simply shot through one wing. At least that has been my experience.

    Dogs over 10

My female pointing Lab is 9 this season. After she hunted earlier this fall, she seemed very uncomfortable and in some pain. My wife ordered some glucosamine canine chews. I have been giving these to the dog with meals. I have noticed that she seems to be less uncomfortable and recovers more...

    Saturday is opener

I shot a very young rooster this morning, not at all unlike one of your birds. I suspect we are seeing some very late hatch birds.

    Saturday is opener

Oh, I agree. Common sense and years of experience suggest that I will see and meet other hunters on public land on a weekend opener. You can still respect each other while hunting limited public land.

    Saturday is opener

I have question for those complaining about hunters showing up at a WMA after another vehicle is in the parking lot. I am a rather new resident of Minnesota. But I have noticed that a number of the WMAs in this state are very large but have very few parking areas or access points. Do some of...

    Black Cloud for Pheasant

Much of shooting is psychological and confidence in your guns and ammo helps with performance. There many that believe they can purchase skill. Heavy marketing feeds into this magical thinking.

    2024 Upland Season

Had one of the most outstanding September hunting seasons. I have been involved in taking 100 birds since September 1st. Pigeons, doves, geese, prairie chickens, ruffed grouse. Over half of the birds were taken over or retrieved by my dog.

    Black Cloud for Pheasant

It looks as though that Federal Flight Control wad used in the Black Cloud shells is resistant to the effects of choke. Several years ago, I purchased a few bags of the wads used in the Black Cloud shells. They were on closeout at a gun shop in Salt Lake City. I tried several different steel...

    prairie chicken

I called and spoke to grouse research with MN DNR. The battery on the radio beacon is dead. They last about a year. The bird had both a radio beacon and a leg band. I sent the numbers off both and tail and wing feathers in. The beacon was used to determine the prairie chicken use of cattle...

    prairie chicken

Just got home from our prairie chicken hunt. My neighbor got on bird from a covey "popcorn" flush on Saturday morning. I choked. I got two birds with single shots on single flushes Sunday morning. One of my birds was the subject of a government surveillance program as it had a radio beacon...

    2024 Upland Season

A couple of years ago, at annual pheasant camp in Iowa, we took pigeon breast, dredged in frying mix, and deep fried it. We then coated in Buffalo Wild Wings sauces. We used the hot sauce and Parmesan garlic. All of it was eaten and nobody complained. There is much call to do it again this year

    2024 Upland Season

I have fixed pigeon as fajitas. It's not bad at all. Most people would say they taste better than that goose that I shot. The bacon wrapped poppers in the photo was made with dove. After hunting season, I will likely take all the pigeon meat, along with goose, pheasant legs, etc, grind it a...

    Dove Today

After working today, my neighbors and I helped a dairy farmer reduce his pigeon population this evening. We got 9 pigeons and 3 doves. Tomorrow morning we are hunting a grain field for doves.
