    Tripping or Falling

Amazing how bagging a bird can cure many of man's ailments. :)

Help on a special kind of wild pheasant.

I saw a black, black, black melly in SW MN the end of November. He flushed silently out of some standing corn I was walking on a WMA that should have had a bunch of birds and had almost none. He was too far to get once I saw him. If it was SD, I would have assumed he was pen raised. Since it...

Is this an old or young pheasant?

He finally met his match. It was his time. I always get a kick out of the loners that hide far away from the rest of the birds. There are some smart cookies out there.

Help on a special kind of wild pheasant.

Reminds me of this, for some reason.

    MN report

Updated: December 18th, public land hunt, SC MN. We had a nice drive down to pheasant country. Arriving at about 9:45, with the wind out of the NW, we headed along the trees on the cut corn edge of a WMA that we've hit a couple times in recent weeks. There was less than an inch fresh...

Help on a special kind of wild pheasant.

Has that photo been colored? It looks like the neck has blue in the ring too. As for a true kansas blue back, I could be wrong, but I thought it was just another strain. I didn't think they got *that* blue though. Any nuclear plants nearby? Check for 3 eyed fish in the streams and ponds.

Is this an old or young pheasant?

I've always thought the white is the wearing off of the outer dark color. If the whole spur was white, then maybe more genetic variation. White tips is another thing where I start thinking they might be a 3rd year bird. More wear and tear.

Is this an old or young pheasant?

    How did they define collapse?

Is this an old or young pheasant?

I'll agree that he isn't this year's bird. Probably 2nd year bird (different than a 2 year old). When they start to curve and are really sharp/slender at the tip, I start to wonder about the possibility of a 3rd year bird. Not a biologist, just my thought process. My first bird today had...

    Snowshoeing for pheasants?

No idea. I got the impression the first one I heard about was not from a northern climate and got in over his head (figuratively). This was the 2022/2023 season, with mega drifts around the sloughs. The farmer saw me heading for the same slough and stopped by the vehicle later to check to...

    Brush pants with zipper legs

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure it works for a lot of people, but I prefer my two in one pants.

    Brush pants with zipper legs

I have a pair of sjk brush pants. They are getting close to retirement after 2 or 3 seasons. They aren't the most resistant to briars when new and get kind of fuzzy and less protective over time. However, they have decent pockets, and I like that they have zippers at the bottom of the legs...

    Ammo in cold weather

Regarding the issue with the shells not firing... If 2 of the 4 failed in another gun, is the thought that 2 guns had light primer strike issues? Or simply the primers are harder than most, and a number of guns might have issues?

    Ammo in cold weather

The delivery part is gone, but the various brands are still supplied to schools, grocery stores, etc. I'm not positive on the details, but I think the family sold the food production side of the business a handful of years ago, but kept the home delivery half. They then rebranded the delivery...

    Ammo in cold weather

When working there, I would swing by the distribution center periodically. They would take broken boxes of ice cream goodies and put them in a big pile 10 to 20 yards from the warm up room door. Employees could buy them at a discount. I didn't want to go through the whole process of putting on...

    Ditch/Road Hunting. IMPORTANT-MUST READ

I'm not sure I could resist creating something that would get me in trouble, somehow, by someone. Too many naughty ideas already swirling in my head. I'll give it some time, to get those impulses under control, and then *maybe* have at it. I have to close my eyes and get to sleep anyway...

    Ammo in cold weather

I did an internship at Schwan's in Marshall, MN, way back when. Their distribution center buildings are kept at -40. People had to put on snowmobile suits every day to enter and do their work. I felt bad for the people in the winter, going in there when it is dark and cold outside in the...

Yeah, but was that -40F or -40C? ;)

    Tripping or Falling

Yes, it could. The personal locator beacon/messaging devices use satellites. They should work anywhere. This should be available next year for a beta program. When it is fully available, it could save some money, versus the separate subscriptions for a cellular plan and a satellite messaging...

    2025 Pheasant Season out west/midwest

I get the part that there are plenty of pheasants there. But are you suggesting anyone harvesting them there is shooting fish in a barrel? 😛 ;) What is it about the roosters in that county that makes them so easy to limit on?
