How long do birds stay in the grasses with standing crops around?

Here's a question I figured I'd throw out there for discussion.. On average, how long do birds stick around in the grasses/huntable cover before moving into standing corn (if it is nearby). I've had pretty hit or miss luck, some of my best fields have still had standing corn around but the first...

    How many birds each season?

Mid 20's with very flexible work schedule. Haven't missed a day of the Iowa season yet (some days it's just an hour hunt or so). 52 birds over the dogs, and I've shot 30. No issues with energy or anything like that, never sore. However, I was also running the dogs nearly every day during the...

    How many birds each season?

Personally have been over 100 each year the last two years, with close to 200 over the dogs each season. Mix of private and public land, and lots of miles! Iowa.

For those of you with GPS collars..

How durable are the antennas on the handheld and collars? I recently purchased the Sportdog Tek 2.0 and love the collar and handheld thus far. Everything has worked pretty much flawlessly thus far, however I can't help but wonder just how durable the antennas are in general on these type of...

    Needing Help

I would stay north of HWY 20 and from there it’s really just a matter of putting in the hours hunting. I shot birds on public in 19 different counties last year. They are out there, and you’ll find birds if you’re willing to work for them. Hunt during the week and stay away from bigger cities...

Time table for pheasants to “fully” populate new CRP.

Question for you habitat guys. I know there’s no clear cut answer, and tons of variables, but generally speaking if you had to put a “number” on it, how many years does it take for newly enrolled CRP/wetlands to reach their carrying capacity of pheasants? For example, our family just bid in...

    A common tip

My most memorable hunts are the ones with just me and my dog. It’s amazing how much “better” of a hunter I become when it’s that way. I follow my dog anywhere, let her set the pace, and I never seem to miss. Throw a couple of other hunters, dogs, and distractions into the mix and it’s a whole...

Getting on pheasants during the summer?

Wouldn’t they keep public lands closed later than Mid-July if the DNR believed it was hurting birds? I can’t imagine there would be much pushback on that, so I’ve just always trusted that I’m good to go in late July and August. I am certainly open to changing my mind, however.

Getting on pheasants during the summer?

Just wondered if there were any tactics others had to get their birds on dogs this time of year? I have been trying to get my puppy on some birds the last few days after giving them a break during nesting, but haven't had much luck. I know there are plenty of birds around, as many of these areas...

    Dog’s feet

I've never had issues with the dog's feet getting worn out. Maybe it is where I hunt, or the type of cover, but after over 50 times out last year my female golden that made every trip had no issues whatsoever. With that being said, they are constantly out running fields/sloughs/dirt trails/etc...

How about the Garmin Astro? Seems like they are a little less spendy ?

    Training/Hunting Collar

Looking for some input on the training/GPS collar. I know this topic has been discussed plenty before. I currently run the Garmin Sport Pro on my flushing retrievers and it has been great. However, I would really like to know the dogs "stats" for each day (distance traveled, average speed...

    A common tip

Agreed. There's been more than one occasion where I've let the dogs work a running bird very quickly through brome grass, etc., and by the time the bird flushed I was nearly jogging - but well within range for a shot. Likely, I would have been out of range had I called the dogs back and worked...

When do you start running your dogs?

In Iowa, public land is closed to dogs until July 15. I completely agree with this, and would never intentionally run my dogs where I thought they could disturb a nesting hen. I am really itching to get my dogs out on some ground where they can flush a few birds in the coming weeks, and was...

    Hunting Boots

My dad and I were both huge Danner fans for a long time. However, they just don't hold up like they used to anymore and both of us had issues. After trying other brands (irish setters, etc.) we both settled on Crispi as our hands down favorite hunting boot. After over 50 hunting days last year...
