    Opener Etiquette

I was a SD resident for a few years... Resident opener - can be very hot. Get there early to claim your spot, hunters with "proper etiquette" will also get to their spots early and avoid yours if you're already there. However, there will be others that will pull up at shooting time and get out...

Truck Bed / Camping Van / Hunting Rig Set-Ups

There are some smaller crockpots out there, almost more like warmers. However, would there be some way of putting in a 2nd battery. Battery 1 is main car battery. Battery 2 is "camping/hunting" battery that charges via alternator when vehicle is on, runs on it's own when vehicle is off...

Truck Bed / Camping Van / Hunting Rig Set-Ups

https://forum.ultimatepheasanthunting.com/threads/new-drawer-set-up-for-truck.18002/ I copied a lot of what Waterdog did in this thread when he built his, with a few modifications. I might have some notes in a folder somewhere that I can look up later.

What trips do you have planned for this year

I now have a 5, 3, and 2 year old. I know where you're coming from (and where you're going). Enjoy the time with the family and get out when you can! One thing that has helped me is having all of my gear very organized and ready to go at all times in my truck - I can usually get out 1-3 times a...

    Visited SD…..

Here's my take on hunting public land in SD each year... If I hunt hard from 10am to sunset, I am going to get a realistic chance to shoot 3 roosters (doesn't mean I'm coming home with 3). I think anybody in a group of 1-3 can get a realistic chance to limit on public land with hard...

Truck Bed / Camping Van / Hunting Rig Set-Ups

What does everyone do for a hunting set up? Here's my current set up, but I'm looking for ideas on what to add... I've got a drawer system that I built - super handy for keeping all my gear always loaded and ready to go for quick 1 hour hunts after work at home, or keeping everything organized...

    Visited SD…..

Totally agree. In an ideal scenario I want to spread my 3 birds out throughout the entire day. Some of my favorite days are when I start at 10am on a very large piece of public land and bring my lunch in my pack with me, knowing I wont' return to the vehicle until mid-late afternoon - which...

How long do you hunt your dogs?

So many variables and only you know the correct answer. For me, I can do 4 days in a row in SD with my black lab, pretty much non-stop from 10am - Sunset. That said, he does not like the sun or heat - 50 degrees and sun and he will wear down a lot sooner than 15 degrees and light snow. Some...

What trips do you have planned for this year

In 30 years I can hopefully take the retired trips you all have mentioned! I'll be 1-2 half days per week in Minnesota. 3-5 days in South Dakota in November, 3 days in South Dakota in December. Possibly a prairie chicken for Minnesota's lottery season if I'm lucky.

First time to SD - lots of questions...

Yes, we all want land to ourselves. But more hunters, more outdoorsman, means more people buying gear, bringing in tax money, buying licenses, donating to conservation groups, starting a conversation about land, habitat, and animals, etc. In the long run, I think the more hunters the better...

First time to SD - lots of questions...

Random questions: 1. What's the difference (if any) between a Prairie chicken, Prairie Grouse and a Greater Prairie Grouse/chicken. All the research I have done seems to use the names interchangeability. Where does the Sharp tail fit in? Sharp tailed grouse and prairie chicken are different...

    A common tip

I used to try and call my dog off and all that seemed to happen was watching the bird flush at the end of the field or we'd never get back on them. I've since just let him go and I go with, it helps that I am young and in-shape, but I've shot several birds after a jog or even short/slow sprint...

    Dog’s feet

I've only had trouble a few times - when the temp is below zero and sunny and the dog's paw hits the snow, snow melts onto paw, dog lifts up paw, snow instantly freezes and forms an ice crystal in their toes. A few times in south-south central SD I've run into some "sand burs" that my dog does...

    New to forum

I've hunted all over SD quite a bit since 2008, the only time I've seen a Hun was in 2013 somewhere west of Chamberlain, East of Vivan, South of the Missouri River.

    Field bred golden retriever info

I am 1-2 years away from my next pheasant dog. Currently have a lab and am leaning towards a lab again. From my somewhat limited experience of hunting with others who have Golden's, they've all been very slightly more laid back than labs, both in the field and home. Anybody else in general...

Pup going to training for a month

You've got some learning to do, and that's just fine! The dog is not sure what he is getting a nick for. You need to teach him to "turn the pressure off." After he knows all commands without the collar, then move onto the collar. Say "come" or whatever command you're working while turning on...

Arrowhead Resort at Cedar Shore. Oacoma, SD

Yes, hunter and dog friendly. Haven't been there in several years, but it is probably the nicest quality hunter friendly place that you could stay at within a 100ish mile radius of there. Personally, it is out of my price range for hunting trips - however if you're wife is coming along, it...

    dogs in the motel rooms?

I haven't really found one in SD that does not allow pets. I'm sure there's some nicer hotel chains that don't though. I have started to prefer the $50-75ish motels that really aren't very nice, but allow me to park right outside the room. Very convenient for loading and unloading gear right...
