What gears a new hunter must have

Year One / You're ready to hit the field and will come across birds whether you have the cheapest gear or most expensive: Comfortable boots, preferably waterproof. Jeans. $5 vest. Orange Hat. Gun that reliably fires most of the time. Year Two: Chaps or Upland hunting/briar pants Year Three...

    Training Differences?

I asked one of my good trainer friends that awhile ago, and his answer was along the lines of, "for the most part there is no difference. If you're forcing me to answer one or the other, I've maybe very SLIGHTLY noticed that female dogs are easier to train early on and better in the field in...

    Relocation opportunity

I'd put in a vote for Chamberlain. On the interstate so it's easy to get places. Can't hardly beat the walleye fishing. Can get into pheasants within a 1-60 mile radius in any direction. Chamberlain ahead of Pierre because of interstate, Pierre ahead of Chamberlain because of a few more amenities.

Pup going to training for a month

Not quite saying take a step back, because in an ideal situation a dog needs some form of mental, physical, training, exercise, obedience, etc. every day. But just make sure that what you are doing is aligning with your goals and your trainers training program/building blocks.

Pup going to training for a month

It is great that you are trying to learn. I would recommend to talk with the trainer and see what you can do, because I'd hate to have you unknowingly mess something up and delay the progress from the trainer. Training a dog is just like school, the pup is starting at Kindergarten and each...

    possession thread made me paranoid

I've been checked one time out of hundreds, if not thousands of hours in the fields. I had to empty all my shells out of my pocket and he checked every one. When going through different types of land with different rules in the same day, some people I know do one pocket of lead, one pocket of...

Pup going to training for a month

Well maybe that answers the question... he'll continue working with him and get the problems fixed.

Pup going to training for a month

I don't really know what to tell you that is positive or encouraging... better trainer? I might be wrong, but I feel like a professional/quality trainer would not bring the dog back to you without the retrieving problem being 100% fixed AND have created another problem in the process? Some dogs...

    Possession Limit

I'm amazed at how long this thread has gotten and how much is up for debate. I don't think it could be any simpler... The law says daily limit is ___. The law says possessions limit is ___. That's it, end of conversation. If you shot it that day, it's part of your daily limit. If you have it...

    Sharpies at Sunrise

If you've got the ability, energy, land, and dog power, might as well maximize your time and give it a go.

    Possession Limit

Hmm... I keep a leg/wing/head attached when I'm in SD traveling and keep them thawed in the cooler for the few days of the trip. Then when I get back home I will "finish" cleaning them since often times in SD they weren't cleaned the best (water jug, hotel, hose, dark outside) and cut off...

First time to SD - lots of questions...

Got some good advice going on here now. A few more, if it looks at all questionable that you might get stuck - avoid it or just walk it down and back. The last thing a farmer wants in the fall is you walking a mile to find him and him getting in his tractor to come tow you. It may look like...

    Roadside Survey

25% is not a big deal to me... they normally see 2, now saw 1.5. Normally see 4, now saw 3. Normally see 8, now saw 6 - what's not to say that last year the conditions were right and they happened to see an extra one they normally wouldn't and this year the conditions were poor and they...

    New E-collar needed

Doesn't encompass everything you need (and it's old), but I have had a Tri-Tronics Sport Basic G3 for 10 years and have had it in my pocket while swimming on multiple occasions over the years. Neither the collar nor remote has ever failed me. I don't know if the product quality has changed...

First time to SD - lots of questions...

Read the rulebook. I always read it front to back before my SD trips. I'm not going to look it up right now, I will in 2 months, but I believe there is something in there that says something along the lines of, "a worn two wheeled track along a section line is a road." Meaning, the road may be...

    Minnesota Hunting Atlas

Not that I know of, but they do have books of the Walk-In Access. Which I don't completely get the point of... either list all the public land or don't waste the money on making something with a fraction of it... A few options... OnX. MN Recreation Compass. Or MN Recreation Compass and...

Pup going to training for a month

I had one last year that I winged, dog chased for about 45 minutes in every direction and every now and then I could see it fly a few feet into the air and back down. Then I think we unknowingly pushed it to a group of 3 guys in the (public) field because I heard them yell, "(dog's name) just...

Uninsulated Danner Pronghorns For Early Season...

I had Danner Pronghorns for several years, and I'll say they are great for someone that is a weekend warrior but not for someone who puts on hundred + miles a season. Danner Customer Support is amazing and made me a Danner fan for life. The Pronghorns have a 1 year warranty. I had Pronghorns...

Time table for pheasants to “fully” populate new CRP.

I agree with the two above posts that the neighbors also make a huge difference. I have unsuccessfully hunted (and tend to no longer hunt) some very nice pieces of CRP type fields in SD that are not boardering any other quality habitat, cattail, sleugh, water, tree line, food source, shelter...

    Prairie Chicken lottery

I applied for the first time as well. I've taken a lot of notes and done some research the last year on them. Made a little chart based off lek counts, previous years hunter success rate, hunter applications / permits available, public land available to try and determine which zone to start...
