    Weather!!!!

I hunted those Thursday and Friday windy days, it made it tough. Walking into the wind, some birds held. But if you couldn't get a quick shot off they were gone fast. Most of them just got really high into the sky so fast that it was just an awkward shooting angle, I definitely struggled...

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

Spent 3 days in SD, mix of public and private. I am generally an optimistic person so I wasn't reading too much into the negative reviews and forecasts on here. I'd say overall it was better than the doom and gloom forecasts, but worse than my positive optimistic expectations. Pheasants...

Pheasant hunting during the gun deer season

I feel like I see more deer while pheasant hunting than I do pheasants, but they are all just bedded down in the grass. A deer hunter really wouldn't know they are there. Likewise, my deer hunting friends always talk about all the pheasants they see and hear while deer hunting.

    Hardest shot for me. You?

I've never given this much thought, but after some reflection on this this season, definitely the straight away. I am well under 50% success on straight away shots this year. I believe a right to left is slightly more successful for me than a left to right.

    advice on labs foot problems

Maybe something like Musher's Secret Paw balm type thing? You'd typically put it on the bottom of the foot, but I'd kind of think it may work on top as well?

    advice on labs foot problems

No advice... but they healed nice and quick in 4 days from pic 1 to pic 2. I am going to guess that it is from something they rubbed against. Given that it's never happened in the field prior to this is 9 years, was there something different that he could have pawed or continually rubbed...

What is the best pair of boots you ever owned for hunting pheasants?

Lots of years I do the same with my Muck Chores. Very nice for when you unexpectedly come across some water. This year with the lack of water in most places, I have not worn mine yet.

Weight of labs and golden retrievers

Most likely sticking with a lab for my next dog in a year or so, but I have not ruled out the one you are mentioning... but yes, for the most part any hunting breed with good genetics, decent obedience, an owner that gets them out more than a couple times a year, should pick up and excel at...

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

I enjoy the long physical/mental aspect of it. This year I've added a Garmin watch with GPS and have enjoyed looking at the (worthless) stats and maps at the end of each hunt. Here's my last fields walked, I usually walk 2 fields a day when hunting around "home" for about 5ish miles in 3ish...

gearing up for 10 day solo road trip

Water, shade, rest in the kennel. Unless they have a problem and need something special/extra with electrolytes, carbs, sugars, etc., there's really nothing more needed. A high fat (peanut butter) or meat only protein (summer sausage) snack really isn't going to provide them with any source of...

Weight of labs and golden retrievers

My current lab can bulldoze his way through the cattails with no problem. But I am curious if he is missing some smart wily birds that stay under the cattails and use it like a tunnel system, and if a smaller dog that could tunnel under the cattails would be more beneficial.

Hunting a WMA Near a House

I get what you are saying but I'm going to take the other side of this. Because that would also prohibit land from becoming a WMA that goes up for sale within 1/2 mile of a house, and I don't want to limit on what can become public land. I want more of it, not less.

    Unbiased SD report 10/22-10/25

I always feel the same way each time I go. I wish the license was split up differently, whether 3 3 day periods, or just the entire season. I only make 2 trips for about 3-4 days each because I really don't want to buy an additional license and justify more 3-4 day long trips with it...

    MN opening weekend

I like to call it the "cover within the cover". Hunted a field yesterday that had great grass but lacked diversity or any thick nasty stuff. There was one shrub in the middle of the field, and the only bird (hen) we saw was there. Nice picture! Good looking bird and dog. Keep posting, I've...

gearing up for 10 day solo road trip

I can second that one. A few years ago had a flat and literally could not find anywhere with firm enough ground to change it. The jack sunk into the ground everywhere. Eventually walked a ways to a neighboring farmhouse and was very luckily greeted by a nice guy who drove his tractor down and...

    Enough of the good news...

Hunt one: 0/0 Hunt two: 0/2 Hunt three: 2/2 Hunt four: 1/4 3/8 on the season. I’m right there with you. The 1/4 day was frustrating, all easy, and rarely do you get a chance at 4 public land roosters.

    First time with shock collar

One unrelated note - when dealing with the general public, animal lovers, etc., they hear the term "shock collar" and think animal torture. I have had much better luck when talking with them by referring to it as an "E-Collar" (short for electric collar). And then referencing that it is...

Garmin Fenix (or other smartwatches, technology, etc.)

What I've noticed is those young dogs are great and cover ground, but the old dogs have the nose and experience. Kind of like comparing NFL QB's... A young and athletic Justin Herbert or Patrick Mahomes is great and has lots of potential, but that old timer like Tom Brady is just smart...

    First time with shock collar

If already collar conditioned, then I agree with the above. Give them a zap in the field until they respond or back off from the chase. Eventually they will learn that chasing a rabbit or deer amounts to nothing.

    E-Collar Recall to Ping/Vibrate

I trained my lab the same way. Started with voice commands. Then overlayed to a whiste. 1 whistle meant sit/stop, look at me. 3 whistles meant return to me. I then overlayed the collar beep with the same thing - 1 collar beep meant sit, 3 collar beeps meant return to me. So while training...
