    The accidental pheasant hunter

Have enjoyed following your stories over the year, thanks for sharing! I grew up never hunting, or anything gun related. Moved to South Dakota for college and made a few local friends. We would road hunt, looking back - some of it illegally, it interested me a little bit. Then I got invited...

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

I am a mostly public land hunter, but I can make an argument on either side that pay hunting is good or bad for the future. Reasons it's good: Allows landowners an additional source of income to provide better quality habitat. Not all public land has everything needed for pheasants, so I...

    2021 Season

This is the time of year to be a little bit careful and mindful of the potential rooster landing spots after some shots.. it doesn't take much ice to hold a dog, but there's not much out there some days right now.

    Picking a new pointer puppy

I think my lab's ability to "flash point" is just simply what he has learned on his own over 10 years of quite a few wild pheasants. Years 0-2 I don't recall it happening ever, then a bit more each year after that to point where it's become quite common now. I think he has learned when to...

    Picking a new pointer puppy

I have a very similar situation. Mine has developed what I'll call a flash point over the years and I love it. Enough so that I think my next dog in a year or two will be lab with pointing background, just to have a better chance of keeping that trait/style of hunting going for me.

    Tick medicine

I've used Sentry Fiproguard for years and I cannot recall the last time I even found a tick on my lab, same active ingredients as the big name brands for a lot less cost.

    Kennel Covers necessary under Topper?

How did you make the homemade AC Unit? I agree, the heat is far more what worries me under the topper. I just added a 12V plug in and a 120W converter in the back of mine, and am looking for something I can do to keep it cooler. Early season this fall I just put a small fan on the front of the...

    Kennel Covers necessary under Topper?

Depends on the temp... I have an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer in mine so I always know the temp in the back. Here's what I've noticed and followed for my lab in Minnesota and traveling the upper midwest. And there are a lot of variables to this - do you have a front slider window or side...

License split for next year (non-res)

I'm not going to go search the rule book right now, but I do know that one of my annual trips that is always the 2nd weekend of December was always one week short of that license rule. I don't recall if it always seemed to start on the Monday following our weekend trip, or if it was the 3rd...

    Impact of fatigue on shooting

I'm into fitness stuff... If you are using the GPS on your smartwatch, then it's going to be 100% accurate in the distance traveled. I have a Garmin Fenix and I created an "activity" on it called Pheasant Hunting. But if you are counting steps, each brand is going to vary significantly...

gearing up for 10 day solo road trip

I'm not a trapper but I was under the other assumption... the more you pull the tighter it will get. Most dogs will panic and keep pulling. Training dogs really isn't more than teaching them how to turn off the pressure or stimulation, so some well trained dogs will feel the pressure and then...

    favorite hunting shirt

I like to be able to "move freely" and feel lightweight. An orange under armour dry fit sweatshirt with a t-shirt underneath and a vest over top, when the temp is between about 25-55 (majority of hunts). If it's colder than that, then a moisture wicking base layer type shirt underneath the...

    Pheasant opener

I'm sure I can look this up online, but how many people pheasant hunt in California? How many birds are harvested? Is pheasant hunting a popular thing? What are your expectations when you go out (hope to just see a rooster or hen?, hope to maybe get 1 rooster??

    Who let “this” dog out!!!

I'm going to agree with some of the others that intact males are not the problem, it's the proper socialization as a puppy and throughout their life. I have a 10 year old intact male lab who has never shown a sign of aggression towards another dog, person, child, etc. However at age 10 he still...

    Pheasant opener

Knowing nothing of California pheasant hunting, are these wild birds you are all talking about or some sort of state released bird program?

How can they hay this much public ground

Possibly... After rethinking what I saw last week in SD, CREP (private, open to public), WIA (private, open to public), WPA (federal) were the ones that I know I saw hayed. I can't recall if I saw WMA's (or other state owned land) that was hayed.

    Who let “this” dog out!!!

In general when hunting with a new group or new dogs, which is rare for me, I like to get to the hunt early, park away from the cover where you can make a bit of noise, and allow the dogs to run around, socialize, familiarize, burn off some initial energy. Then when we get to the field they are...

    question about leased ag land

I think they are all different, however I ran into my first ever problem with it last week in South Dakota. New piece of land that a family bought, owned by multiple family members. I had permission from one and was hunting. Halfway through my hunt a pickup flies through the field and accuses...

    Hardest shot for me. You?

Was listening to a podcast (I don't recall which one, The Flush? Pheasants Forever On The wing?) recently and they were talking guns, patterns, shells, etc. Mentioned that when shooting, some gun brands are designed to "cover up your target" while shooting, and some are designed to "see your...
