    Food plot failure

No. Our ground is pretty high and doesn't pull water from far at all...less than a mile on all our farms. The Little Sioux river isn't too far away and it is a huge mess. The West Fork of the Little Sioux is the local river to where I live and its basin doesn't stretch north far enough to...

    Crazy weather

Everything is fine in my immediate area, but any low areas close to the Big or Little Sioux rivers will not have any nests or chicks left. It is a real mess. If the hatch had happened, which has started, there will be a shortage of young birds and if they hadn't hatched and the hens renest...

    Food plot failure

Yes, better than most any other problem that surfaces. They just dug up the seed again...they will be starving this winter if we get any snow cover.

Pheasant Fact Friday - PF FB Repost

    Interesting one this week....

    Food plot failure

Same culprits here. I read, maybe here, that pheasants could "smell" the seed. As it germinates the starches change to sugars and they "dial-in" on that. True??? I don't know, but I do know that they can sense it some how. If pheasants also have a keen sense of smell, that is one more way...

    Food plot failure

I just replanted about 4 acres of the 6 I planted this spring. I just assumed it was striped gophers, but I now believe it is the pheasants. I started planting all grain sorghum, they seemed to leave that alone a bit more, but this spring they hammered it. I did notice the plots that...

Dog story in the last PF Journal

A man's dog has a terrible accident while hunting and the aftermath that follows.....that is enough. So it might not have been a "man". It was a week or 2 since I read it.

Dog story in the last PF Journal

Did anyone read the story starting on page 30 of the summer 2024 Pheasants Forever Journal. We must have 2 memberships where I work as we received 2 copies of the Journal this month. The gals brought the extra one to me. I made the mistake of reading a bit of it last week when we were slow...

Pheasants in the wind, a specific situation

For me in high wind conditions, I could get talked into doing something different on those mornings. I disagree with most on the birds being at a disadvantage. Things (most of the time) happen so fast, it is much harder to get on them...except when a bird mistakenly wants to go into the wind...

    Pump gun

Shoot what you have been shooting, it is a poor time to switch guns before a big trip without having experience with it. If I knew I would have to hunt for 6 hours straight, no breaks, to get my limit, I might consider a lighter gun than my 11-87, which older fellas start to consider heavy....I...

Hoping the Weather Stays As Is in the West!!

Here in NW Iowa, things are looking great...except for my food plots! Not sure if the birds are getting after the seeds once they sprout again, or what the deal is. I don't have enough seed to replant everything. Might have to check with PF and see if they have any extra. With all the rains...

    Food plots

Is the atrazine effective on water hemp, mare's tail and lambsquarter? Add a bit of velvet leaf, smartweed and foxtail and that is generally what I fight. Planting saftned grain sorghum currently.

    Flooding

Yikes! That is much worse than what I had envisioned! Bummer for sure. You must have a waterway, creek, river there close? That is a ton of water!

    Flooding

Right! I am not sure how/what those chicks have been eating when it has been so dry. Maybe we have had limited chicks making it to maturity. I know where the is a big mound ant hill just off a driving path, I have thought about putting a trail cam on it to see if hens bring their broods...

    Flooding

I guess we need to be careful what we wish for. This spring has been wet in NW IA too. After 3 years of drought, we seem to get rain about every 4 days this spring. 1.25" Monday night into Tuesday and it is raining again as look out the window now. A great year to plant trees or grass....I...

    Strip Disking

If you burn a third of it every year, I think you will be providing plenty of brooding cover.
