    Iowa's opener is today.

Well, had my 3 in the first hour or so, the fellas I took out had some beautiful (Parker and Fox maybe?) 100 plus year old double barrel shotguns, one of them did get a bird toward the end when my knees were screaming at me to stop. If I wasn't abiding by our No-Party Hunting law, I would have...

    Iowa's opener is today.

Welcome '24-'25 pheasant opener. This will be the first season my father will not be hunting, I think this has tempered my enthusiasm. Taking a couple guys out for a friend this morning, the regular crew is fading. Post those hero pics Iowa hunters! Be safe everyone, looking forward to some...

Looks like I am not the only one that is dry....

We had 3 years going, but we did get good rains this past spring and through the growing season. The last 2 months, between the heat and lack of rain, the crops will be pretty much gone in my area for the opener this Saturday. The temps for the opener are looking better, the low Friday night...

    Youth Pheasant Season

Good man BB. I am concerned about the temps for the opener. It might just be a quick 1 hour go, if the temps are bumping 50* to start.

    Rainy hunt

Good work Bob, nice to see some rain.

Looks like I am not the only one that is dry....

I just saw this on the net, I think they could back the date up to August 7th and we wouldn't have .5" here. The dogs could really use some rain this week (Iowa opener is next Saturday)....it just happens that we have some chances, 30% one day, so they are saying there is a chance.

    Saturday is opener

I am about to block GH for that burn....not a MN guy, but root hard for the lovable losers in purple up north.

    Newbie, but not newbie.

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you have your poop in a group and are made up of some solid values. Good to have you here. Here is a tip: It took me a bit to realize that pheasant hunting varies a lot depending on the where you are. I have deep cover almost every where I hunt...the I...

Getting older and I am starting to notice it.

I am somewhat lucky that our ground isn't extremely hilly so inclines are not an issue, my hunting begin at 8:00 and I can't remember hunting past noon, usually earlier. The cover I hunt in is almost always tall and thick, that is what will drain me (it is always high steps) and I fear my 11-87...

Hunting silently and way out of gun range

That was my exact thought to the post you referred to....not the seeing color part. These birds hear and feel you coming way before you get anywhere near then. They sure don't "see" you in Iowa cover. It makes me laugh seeing fellas dressed head-to-toe in camo to pheasant hunt. Their defense...

Getting older and I am starting to notice it.

I just replied to a thread here and it hit me. I turned 60 this year, I have a couple pains that just don't go away, my hand, arm and leg strength loss is noticeably. I made a remark about using a gun I know and trust. We will see how the season goes, but I might be joining the massing who...

    Man, how tough are dogs

Nice composition Bob. Your dog will amaze you almost every outing if you are paying attention. So agree with hunting hard pushing dogs in temps much over 50. Also, having a shotgun you know like the back of your hand, no fumbling or even looking for the safety (your finger should already be...

Hunting silently and way out of gun range

This is one of those differences we have hunting birds in different locations, habitat, bird populations and hunting pressure conditions. I hunt about half the days NDP does and shoot about half the number of birds entirely on private ground, but my experiences mirror his. The birds already...

    Hunting with two dogs.

I am of no help here, I can't imagine trying to hunt with myself and 2 dogs. I am just envisioning them hunting on either side of me and birds flushing where I am not looking, both birdy at the same time with different birds. It would make me feeling like those fellas that just don't pay...

    Iowa Roadside Survey

The Big Sioux and Little Sioux rivers had major flooding...we got lucky in my immediate area, the West Fork of the Little Sioux is closest to me, had the big rains just north of it's basin. We will be fine locally with numbers. I am not sure about the early harvest. The beans are starting to...

The good news for me in NW IA, is that the Cottontails are up 65%! Hope to still scare up a couple roosters.

Hang in there, you are young men....I hope! Actually, those are not terrible odds, roughly a 1 in 4 chance. I imagine I would turn into a terrible shot the if I had the chance.
