    South Dakota Wetlands Protection

So much of this hits home, even in Iowa. So much is geared toward production and very little toward conservation. Not sure how to change this except with his statement about that was something like "conservation paying as well as production". The man should be a lobbyist for conservation...

    Ammo in cold weather

An ounce and 5 eights....interesting load choice. I would try running the gun dry in the cold temps and then those turkey loads should go bang.

    Coming from Canada

I am pretty sensitive to hunting close to roads since seeing that. I still remember it pretty vividly. It wasn't the driver's fault, it was like the dog was memorized with the vehicle coming at her....she sure wasn't listening to us.

    Coming from Canada

"But even in his story the dog didn't die because the owner was hunting a ditch, it got hit while hunting public ground. Always know where your dog is. Hunting a ditch is not inherently dangerous, every situation is different." I am nervous anytime I am up against a roadway, starting and ending...

    Roger’s Toughman boots

The only all cordura boot I have purchased didn't last a season before wearing holes through the fabric. It wasn't on the toes, as I used the rubber "tool dip" for protect/cover there.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

    Have witnessed it myself also.

    Coming from Canada

BDoggin, I don't think even with Iowa plates, people will get the warmest reception road hunting around here. Oh, Bob already has a license, I was giving all other non residents permission, sorry to be so vague about that....I am glad that got cleared-up. I have spent all 60 years of my life...

    Coming from Canada

I know it is legal, I know you can retrieve injured game (without a firearm), that have ended-up on private, even posted ground. I know you can hunt the ground the landowner owns (and pays tax on) but has the roadway easement (the ditches). I am just telling you what the attitude is here...

    How tough are these birds?

My guess on "straight-up" is a head wound or some type of nerve injury.....the "sudden drop" syndrome...they ran out of oxy/blood and should be lying where they fell.

    IHAP experiences

Thanks Bob. The publc land struggle will get worse before it improves here. This fall we are having more terraces, fence lines, old building sites and waterways pushed-out/tiled. It seems like whenever there is a land sale the bulldozers and excavators will be coming shortly to clear...

    IHAP experiences

There are a few IHAPs within 20 miles or so of me, they look OK from the road,. About 3 years ago I hunted one late in season, saw zero birds, which seemed strange. I did step into a hole and fell about as hard as I ever had. Didn't break anything, but that leg turned all sorts of interesting...

    How tough are these birds?

I have only witnessed the true straight up flight after being shot twice. The last time was a group hunt I had, a really strange foggy morning with a ton of frost on everything. The fog was just lifting, it was like a ceiling 100 feet high. The hit bird headed straight up and I yelled to my...

    Coming from Canada

Everyone (any of the locals) knows it is "city guys" or "out-of-towners" without any permission to hunt, driving around. Anyone one that lives in rural Iowa, likely knows what I mean. In SD hunting is commercialized, road/ditch hunting might be encouraged even. In Iowa, hunting isn't...

    Coming from Canada

Honestly, I am not sure you want to do that, it might be legal in Iowa, but not looked at favorably...with Canda plates, I might avoid that. Keep coming west 100 miles and I will put you on birds.

    Young Birds

Shooting a lot more young birds this year also, a sign of good chick survival. We had some rains this year (until August) and guessing many more insects for the chicks to eat, was the big difference.

    Pheasant Breakfast Sausage

MNMEAD, I do the same. I filled the birds after the hunt then vac-pak and freeze until I have my possession limit, then I get my pork, sometimes it has also been froze, grind, season and mix. Then vac-pak the finished product. Sausage from over a year ago still tastes great! I think the...

    How tough are these birds?

I just saw and stole this from a FB post...wow!

    Coming from Canada

That is a bit out of my territory, but the thicker the cover the more birds it typically holds, is my experience....but what do I know, I am from Iowa, no birds here. Must have family there or SD and all their public ground, would seem more appealing.

    Am I crazy?

Not much for trees where I hunt, all privately ground so it will be like any other weekend. I have to think the deer numbers are way down locally, I am just not seeing many. With the way warm temps, these first seasons deer hunters will have a tough time of it.

    Retire my hat?

Absolutely do not retire that lid! That contains years worth of MOJO that you will lose if discarded. Wear that like a seasoned warriors, it looks great too....old PF cap, love it. I have a old blaze cap with a Leupold logo on the front, I gave been wearing for around 20 years, just bird...
