NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Easy to do when the weather is like this. Every bird in a 10 mile radius will group up in the best cover. We used to have a 100 birds in every section.

    Snow

Close to another 2 inches this afternoon.

    Snow

Birds need to be left alone in this cold with the heavy snow cover. We had nearly 10 inches last Monday then another 2 inches Thursday then another inch Friday night. CRP fields are nothing but snow. Splitting up quail will make it hard for them to survive.

    Snow

Think again. I thought I could get out to pull a card from my trail camera today which is only 3 miles down the road. No way. Drifts are 3 feet deep and some deeper in Rush County.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

We had a good melt off today out here, birds will be fine. I put out some corn and milo for the covey behind the house this afternoon. Had 8 hens fly out of the shelter belt. It is wet.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

I never thought 5-8 inches would hurt the birds at all. If so there would not be a bird in the Dakota's and Iowa. Saw a couple of roosters out and about this morning behind the house. But with a lack of habitat and a cold winter some loss will happen. -10 for Sunday night. Where my daughter...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

.35 in the gauge I would have guessed 3 inches of snow. Looks like more on the way for Monday. I would have thought the drought monitor would have moved in a better direction with all the moisture. Makes me wonder if those experts determining the drought map might have a lot of cattle.

Browning Gold Fusion vs Benelli UL

The new Montefeltro is superior to the UL in every way. First the ease of loading on this gun is as good as it gets. A child could load it with one finger. 2nd it is very slim feeling, very similar to a 20 gauge. The narrow forearm feels as thin as my 20 gauge Monte. 3rd it is light...

    Road conditions

Roads are horrible. Took me 2 hours to get the mud off my truck christmas eve. I won't go again til it dries out. As a local I hate it when people drive down the roads and tear them up making them impassible. Creates a lot of work for those running the maintainers. You can get down them...

    Barbed Wire - Training

Most generally I don't hunt around barbed wire and when I do I practice "foreseeability". I teach mine how to go under barb wire but no bird hunt is worth injuring a dog.

    Barbed Wire - Training

I always heal mine to the fence when they are young pups, have them sit, then lift the wire for them to go under. Very easy to do once you have covered obedience and collar conditioning. I do like to start with a single strand of electric fence that is not hot. Letting a dog figure it out on...

    Getting Good Rain

There are still several counties here in extreme and severe drought.

    Getting Good Rain

I teach 30 minutes from home and we got much more rain at school than we did at the house. .30 but it is still lightly raining. It's going to shut down hunting for several days. But we need it.
