That's funny. I absolutely loathe the Winchester X steel shells. Back when I was shooting steel all the time, I liked Federal. Either their Speed Shok or Black Cloud. 3" - #2 - 1 1/4 oz was my go to. I shot plenty of 1 1/8 oz, but prefer the 1 1/4 oz.

Give pheasants adequate habitat and predators are inconsequential. Sparse cover equals easy pickings for the predators, but it goes back to the issue at hand. It's habitat, not predators.

I shoot a Carlson Cremator Mid Range all season long. It seems to pattern the shells I shoot well. Late season shots for me seem to be in that 35-40 yard range or flushing at my feet and shooting at 20 yards.

Lots of variables to consider, but I do believe that the loss rate would likely be over half if hunting public land or other large tracts of grass or cattails that would allow a crippled pheasant a plethora of places to run and hide.

Possible. There is plenty of snow on the ground, but I have read that pheasants get moisture from their food and the corn in the food plots is pretty darn dry come late season.
