    Thanksgiving Hunt

Sounds like a great trip! There are a few WPA's in the area I hunt that were plowed up and planted with corn this past year. I talked to a guy from USFWS and he said that putting the ground into crops is one of their tools to restore the grasses. They start by grazing or burning and when...

    Let's talk cattail strategies

As with all pheasant hunting, there are lots of variables to consider. My strategy for cattails is like my strategy for everything when it comes to finding pheasants - work edges/transition habitat and follow the dog when she goes into the cattails or when she darts out into the lighter grass...

    Golden Hour Hunting???

There are several reasons for the 12:00pm (now 10:00am) start time. Pheasant hunting used to be a big event for the entire communities in pheasant country. Starting at noon allowed farmers to get their chores done and not have to deal with guys asking permission, as well as allow them to join...

In your opinion, how many public land pheasants in the bag would make for a successful season?

The better question would be how many pheasants do you need to put in the vest for the season to be considered a success? I shoot enough birds to keep me and my dogs happy. Trying to put a metric on hunting is the antithesis of what it means to be a hunter. The way I see it is this: I shoot...

    Road Etiquette

Your interpretation is correct. However, the 66' can vary. Sometimes it's less, sometimes more. Typically, you'll find a fence or a place where you can see the field begins.

    Road Etiquette

Can you cite the source for that? The only rule I'm familiar with in South Dakota is that the vehicle must be parked as far to the right hand side of the road as possible. SDCL 41-9-1.5 reads "the motor vehicle by which the person has been transported to the hunting location has, to the...

What’s everyone using for non toxic shell’s? For pheasants

I've been super happy with Boss 2 3/4", 4 shot. If you don't want to spend the $$$, I killed a lot of pheasants over the years with 3", 2 shot steel. But the Boss bismuth kills better.

    Definitive List of Stuff

That's a compliment of the highest order. I didn't see a can of coke'n'bacon in the feermz, though. Maybe you switched to Zyn???

I think goose might have been in SD last week.

Thumbs down. Goose would never subject his dogs to a trailer or any other sort of Gucci grabass on a South Dakota hunt, or anywhere for that matter.

    What crop is this?

It's harvested in July usually, a couple weeks before the spring wheat harvest. It's a great cover crop, keeps the weeds out and, for my personal pleasure, is usually good nesting/brood rearing habitat.

    What crop is this?

what bird looks like a flying bowling pin?

I would guess sharptail grouse or possibly prairie chickens. The pic of the male prairie chicken that limitless posted is an exceptional specimen and an even better example of excellent outdoor photography skills,

    Great videos, guys!!

Help on a special kind of wild pheasant.

Much like the elusive jackalope, the KBB is a notoriously sneaky creature. One that only the greatest of hunters could ever imagine to flush within gun range, let alone put in the vest. The blue back isn't feathers, it is a dazzling array of sapphires, likely from its origin near the world...

Here's a common report on any fakebook hunting page.

I'm never sure what bugs me more, the guys who are in denial about their tame chicken shoot or the guys who know that every bird in South Dakota is pen raised. Social media is such a toilet bowl of information, but sometimes I can't help but stare at the metaphorical dumped mud in wonder.

    Trip Report 10/24,25,26 and a little 27

All in all, it sounds like a good trip. Do you have that Pierpont rooster at the taxidermist yet? :)

    Crop rotation

Alfalfa - minimum two years, often three or can be up to six. If the plan is to rotate back to corn/beans. My favorite piece of public ground used to have corn and beans by it and the past three years has been alfalfa. I don't shoot as many pheasants there now. :( Feels like I should be...

    License check. Is this legal?

Conservation Officers are people, too. If one group of hunters gives the CO a tough time, then it will affect how the CO approaches the next group of hunters they encounter. Best practice is to be polite, give them what they ask for and get on with your day. :)

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Great synopsis. Sorry to hear about the pup getting cut, but if tragedy strikes, it's always better to happen at the end of the trip and not the beginning!!
