    2024 Upland Season

The ironic part about 50's is that 50's is the historical average now. haha

    2024 Upland Season

Well this is some interesting weather. On Mon/Tues it was 80 degrees. Now its a heavy wet snow. Guess any moisture is better than none though.

I agree. Its the more dedicated crowd he encountered. Not the casual one.

Here's a common report on any fakebook hunting page.

LOL if you look close enough there's hens in that photo.

You already stated it was the warmest, driest, and dustiest you've ever seen. That would be my reason. Go when there's better hunting conditions presented. I really have no desire to walk around in a dust bowl when its 80 degrees. Even if there's birds to be had. Certainly most of the...

    Odd Encounters...

One of the selling points when I hunt is avoiding people. It helps me unwind. The less bodies I encounter, the better. The more people I meet, the more I like my dog.

    License check. Is this legal?

The most common type of violation here in the hunting realm is deer hunting over bait. They've tried to severely increase the punishments for it too, and yet it continues to happen quite often.

    2024 Upland Season

The issue with anecdotal reporting like yours is that it represents only a small fraction of sample size. What you see is only what you see. Which is fine if you only hunt one specific area. USDA crop reporting and harvest takes the whole state into account. Also, South Dakota is South...

    2024 Upland Season

Looks like the crop harvest has really taken off recently according to the most recent USDA report out yesterday. Its 9 days ahead of schedule from 2023 and 12 days ahead of the 5 year average as of yesterday...

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

I had to do the staples in the dog's leg a couple years ago too. About 2 weeks later it was fully healed. Just make sure they don't try to lick it, so it doesn't get infected...the cone of shame.

    Strange Deer Encounter

That would be my guess too. Drool and abnormal behavior are classic signs.

Not a Word re NE Opening Weekend

Lol a sea lamprey in Nebraska huh. Adapt to drought conditions and survive, or die. haha

    Odd Encounters...

I'd be very skeptical of a random other hunter's safety, not to mention their dog's ability/training too. There's a lot of nutjobs out there and when there's firearms involved, safety is more important to me than anything else. That being said, in the rare event I encounter another hunter, I...

    License check. Is this legal?

Exactly my reasoning. Even though I've never been stopped or checked when hunting or fishing in nearly 30 years here, I've got nothing to worry about. I'm legal and prepared every time I head out. If the gestapo wants to check my papers, have at it. It'll take a few minutes and we'll both be...

Another first timer to SD Post

I agree with Munster. The last hour or two is generally going to increase your odds of success and when its warm out, avoiding the hottest time of day would be a good idea too. I hunt late season and generally speaking the temps are not an issue then but if I had a choice I'd still pick the...

    License check. Is this legal?

If you have your licenses, blaze orange, non-toxic shot (if required), and you aren't over a limit, you have nothing to worry about. Easy peasy. I would like to see more officers out there, personally.

Dog Starting Heat Cycle - Bring for SD Opener ?

Not even remotely close. I'm about half the age of most posters here it seems.

I agree, rarely do I see more than about 20-30 pheasants where I hunt in a outing for a few hours. But the bag limit is 2 roosters for most of the season, and its not THAT hard to bag two of them. Its like, how many birds do you need to see before you are able to fold up a couple? 200? They...

    Here's my trip

Ya that's the issue, someone does that sort of thing and then claims they had a "great hunt." In no way shape or form is a preserve with flare nares considered hunting. And I would certainly never brag about it either.

    Poachers

Ya that's called sketchy party hunting and its a lot more common here than most people realize. I hate it and I think it should be prohibited. You should only be able to fill the tag you have, not someone else's. The elimination of party hunting for deer here would immediately increase the...
