    Deer Season is Upon Us

Sounds like Spur has done his homework on the subject.

    Deer Season is Upon Us

That's one of the selling points of hunting in South Dakota. Season goes a whole month longer there through January. I personally think it should open the last Saturday in October and stay open until the middle of January here, similar to Iowa. But that's another topic.

Good response limitless. Many valid points I agree with.

    Deer Season is Upon Us

Both, personally. The area I specifically hunt is crawling with deer hunters and its all private land. So 1) if someone is hunting deer, they don't want me trouncing around with a dog in that area and 2) the risk isn't worth it, even if the chances of getting shot at is low. All it takes is...

    Private land?

I agree with this part. Go by yourself. And if others are with you, send 1 person up there. I think landowners are way more likely to give permission to one person than a group. Face to face is always more professional and courteous than by phone, email, etc. Don't just assume that since...

    Private land?

That's why I ask for permission before the season. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts. I think a lot more people could gain access to private land if they were willing to put in more windshield time knocking on doors. And if they offered to only go in there after deer season, that would...

    Deer Season is Upon Us

I've never done it or looked into it, so I am not sure myself about this one. Are you sure about that? As long as you have both licenses, no dog, and enough blaze orange, you could conceivably do it. I hunt with a rifle so it wouldn't be an option for me anyways because there's no way I'm...

    Deer Season is Upon Us

The only advice I can offer you is to be safe about it. I know you have goldens and there are a lot of dip shit deer hunters out there during the firearms season that wouldn't even think twice about shooting at a dark colored dog that even slighly resemebles a deer. No rooster is worth getting...

    2024 Upland Season

I'm not sure how far west/southwest it started, but from the northwest metro to St Cloud and then eastward was where the heaviest snow bands fell. If you follow highway 23 that's kind of where I think it was?

    Deer Season is Upon Us

I know. That's why I deer hunt when the season is open. Can't just "go next week" like I can if I want to bird hunt.

Gear Recommendations - Mid-December First Timer

I wouldn't say you need to buy a second set of boots. Bring the ones you have. Feet rarely get cold when you're walking around. Using the appropriate pair of socks is a must though. No cotton whatsoever. It soaks up moisture like a sponge. Boot dryers are a good idea. I use my boot dryers...

    Deer Season is Upon Us

That's interesting. So are you hunting deer or pheasants? Obviously a slug is needed to shoot a deer and bird shot is for pheasants. Also, I imagine the dog isn't present since hunting deer with a dog is against the rules.

    Deer Season is Upon Us

I'll be out there...hunting deer. The area I deer (and pheasant) hunt overlaps and I would never even consider pheasant hunting during the 9 days its open. Nearly every single neighboring property has stands and hunters. Isn't worth it. No orange is illegal in MN. And should you choose to...

    2024 Upland Season

I seem to recall this occuring a fear years ago too. An early October front that produced heavy, wet snow and all the weight knocked down grassland with a lot of season left. MNMEAD is probably right, they have to go somewhere. My guess they just go wherever they can, which at this point...

    2024 Upland Season

I was checking on some deer stands for next weekend recently. Its some of the same area I pheasant hunt after deer season, and its exactly how you described it there too: flattened. 3-4 inches of heavy wet snow completely eliminated 75% of the bird habitat already. It looks like a heavy brush...

    2024 Upland Season

I received over 2 inches of "moisture" yesterday. 1.5 inches of rain and then 4 inches of moisture-rich wet snow. Should help the landscape and scenting conditions.

And a poor quality dog can ruin really good private land too. Been there, done that

    NC Report 10/27-10/31

I hear ya. Sounds like a successful trip regardless. Should be better days ahead when those crops are gone and the temperatures are lower. I'm fairly shocked that all of you and all of your dogs could hunt for 4 days straight, all day, in 70+ degree temps. No way I could do it and no way my...
