    Does shot string matter?

Its going over 1,000 feet per second. 250 feet in 1/4 of a second. How much you think that bird is moving in 1/4 of a second? It doesnt matter, the whole string is going through that bird before it can blink.

    Pheasants and quail

Strange things happen! I am almost 100% when shooting 3/4oz of steel 4s (141 pellets) at doves. Ive only done it about 10 times while duck hunting, but I still couldn't believe it each time. Actually thinking back, the last time i got 2 doves and a snipe in 3 shots with them. I was in the duck...

    Pheasants and quail

1 1/4 5s, and i wouldn't be taking a shot on the covey flush unless it was very close and easy. Then i would switch out for 1 1/8 7.5s and go hunt up the quail.

Bird at your feet straight away .....miss

Lol it happens. Remember to take your time and get set before pulling the trigger, when going straight away they look like they are going so fast but its just all the feathers dancing.. most people empty their gun before the bird is at 30 yards. You have lots of time on a foot flush! How come...

How many birds would you lose/find without a dog?

Yeah dont get caught doing that on wild birds in Iowa. But you can buy birds from the farms and do it all you want on public land, within the legal dates, if you band them. The bands are 10 cents each.

How many birds would you lose/find without a dog?

Had a guy tell me once to throw his labs tennis ball over the house. It was all downhill on the other side and all thick timber with grass. I was playing fetch with him in the front yard and the guy said "throw it over the house", i said how far and he said "as far as you can throw it... He will...

    The truth about Prairie Storm

Use a full to open them up. With flight control wads the tighter the choke the worse the wad performs in most cases. IC patterns the best, Mod is a tossup whether its better or not. When i shot black cloud, i used cyl choke for under 40yd shots.

What choke is in your gun?

    Yes it would!

    The truth about Prairie Storm

Old topic, but all I will say is those flight stopper pellets suck. Theres a reason its 1500fps, you need it just to hope those halos make it through the meat. They tumble and catch a big wad of feathers on the way in, and leave you with a big wad of black chewing gum in the meat. Luckily 70%...

How many birds would you lose/find without a dog?

Absolutely 100%. Stay back and let your dog use its nose... You trained it to find the bird, believe in it and stay back 20 yards gun in hand just in case it somehow gets up again. Walking in there and kicking the grass or pointing the dog in there at your feet is the worst thing you could...

What choke is in your gun?

Pretty much equals what I have seen. Those #5 shells are just barely acceptable for me regarding pellet count in the circle. I want 150, but have had acceptable results at 125. I think Tom Roster said 95ct of #5+ was bare minimum for consistent kills, I prefer more. Im sure at 20-30yds those...

What choke is in your gun?

Might try that at a patterning board first just to be sure... No sense in risking having an unethical choke in and testing it on live birds... We owe it to the birds we chase to be better than that.

What choke is in your gun?

I have cyl and IC in right now, because my last hunt I was testing out tungsten and it patterns like a rifle. I dont think i could hit a pheasant with skt or IC with any of the bismuth shells i have patterned, past about 20 yards. There would be holes the size of a basketball!

Can you help with what's in the crop

Either wheat or barley. Probably flying and feeding with someones domestic birds if there are no wheat fields nearby.

    Lost birds

Agree 100%. I was taught to not take long shots, and honestly i grew up shooting 12ga 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 5s over english setters and GSPs on extremely easy shots... More times than not had to wait for the bird to get out a ways before shooting it. I cant remember success rate back 20 years ago...

    Lost birds

Exactly right on underestimating their toughness. They are, imo, a very easy bird to hit as they sound like a helicopter getting up and fly in a straight line- but they are difficult to kill, lots of feathers and not a big vital area. Tight patterns and shooting at birds in range is the key...

No I didnt? My buddy did. Read my last part on shot selection. Take stupid shots, expect stupid results in his case.

    Lost birds

I agree with most of what you said, except for the guy taking a 45yd quartering shots. Thats how they are getting the cripples. You arent holding a good pattern at 45yds with lead shot unless you are shooting a Full choke, and not many do that. Desperation shots like that is the problem, and the...

    Lost birds

Thats my point... I didnt lose any birds. I dont understand how that is so hard for others to understand? The dozen I shot in thick waist high crp, and the maybe 10 I dropped in cattail/blue stem along cattle ponds were also dead and easily recovered by the lab. All the rest were wide open crop...
