Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

Ive read that one, and I dont understand it. It goes against almost everything i have seen with my own eyes in the field. 42% of birds hit were crippled?? I dont think I have had 2 crippled in the last 100 ducks ive shot with bismuth. They all are mangled and look like they got hit by a bus...

"Thank you" for access to land?

Im late to the party on this thread, but first contact i bring myself dressed nicely and clean while being respectful. But its always ended with "what do you drink, i will leave you a thank you when i hunt" and i do leave their favorite bev on the porch with a thank you and my name/number...

    Importance of eCollars?

Safety reasons is why you want your dog collar conditioned. Even the best dog will get excited and want to sniff that skunk or porcupine, or chase after a deer that they jumped out of the grass. You can yell all you want but pressing a button is a whole lot easier and works 100% of the time. I...

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

On waterfowl, ive never seen birds get hit with steel like they do bismuth. Its night and day different, however several inedible birds due to damage from fracturing. Its a love hate relationship. It knocks the snot out of birds, especially the ones on the edge of decoying range (35-45yd) where...

    Prairie Storm Issue

VERY common now that they have switched to a softer wad material. Just wait until you hang a wad in a rooster at 25 yards due to shot stuck in the wad!

    Inheritance

That "10ga" trench gun (assuming rem mod 10 12ga?) sounds like a fun pheasant gun! Cyl bore little short gun would be a riot

    Food plot failure

I knew a farmer that did the same thing with the sparrows that were crapping all over his equipment. He said he tried a bb gun and they laughed at him, a pellet gun only got a handful before they learned to keep moving, now he uses a 12ga with 1 1/8 #9s and gets 5-6 a shot usually. It's...

Want to give Iowa public a try

I would personally wait until fall, but you can go now and camp in the swamp for the next 4 months i suppose. If you mean somehow all the birds will be dead? They survive the floods here in the river bottoms every year. They simply fly or travel to high ground then return to their normal areas...

Want to give Iowa public a try

    1. You are fine by yourself, in fact you may just sneak up on a few birds that are educated and spooked by groups. 2. They are absolutely slammed the first weekend. 3. Most groups in a parking lot would not let you join for safety reasons. You could probably use this forum to find hunting...

    Chewing On Training Birds

FF you mean? Really want to do it at 7ish months, but it depends on the dogs mentality and where it is within training as well. Theres a fine point in the dogs mental development where it will take this training as part of still pleasing the master and have fun. When the dog is too old you will...

Off limits period and leash question

Dogs are not allowed on federal land without a leash, unless actively hunting. Even camping/fishing they need to be leashed. Probably a few exceptions for specific areas, reading federal regs is a half day job though.

    Chewing On Training Birds

A bumper covered in zip ties cut with sharp ends, with a gap right in the middle the width of his mouth. Couple times bringing that back and he will learn to not chew. Drive to retrieve has to be high though. Thats the old school way (actually it was wooden dowels with nails but....) I use the...

    Crate temperature monitor.

I use a normal outdoor thermometer zip tied on the kennel door. Mine is thermpro brand. Its not instant read, updates every 30 seconds or a minute i believe.

    Which Barrel First For Over/Under

Bottom first has less felt recoil and barrel jump. Top first is quicker to reload after one shot. I shoot bottom first.

    After season shell blowout

I have a good buddy who shoots trap and skeet competitively. He paid off his 9000H in half a season of shells. He shoots about 20,000 rounds a year, shooting more days than not... So he saves about $4,000 by reloading his own. Then i have another buddy who is on the other end, he only loads...

    Lab guys sorry but....

That would be the longest hard working lab I have ever heard of. But its all down to how much work its had in its lifetime. Guys who work their dogs on 100+ retrieves, drills, plus miles of walking every single day are going to have the dog not last as long as the guy who just does a mile walk...

    Prairie Storm Steel

Natchez shooters supply was getting in b&p 20ga pretty regularly last fall. Their heavy game loads shot very well for late season doves.

    After season shell blowout

Shooting 16 and 28 is the best reason i can think of to buy a reloader and pick up a new hobby. You can reload 28ga 3/4oz for $6-7 a box. 16ga 1oz will be around 20/12ga prices, $9/box ish.

    After season shell blowout

Good deals today, outrageous prices 4 years ago. Cant imagine where we will be in 4 more years. Also, if you guys arent rogers customers.. their shells are always "on sale", just their super sales are an additional $1-2 off per box ($10-20 case). They boost the regular price then drop them down...

    Favorite steel

Numbers and percentage doesnt mean anything to me anymore regarding patterns. Some of the highest percentage have been the worst when it comes to bismuth, with fracturing and blotching (BOSS). However with the ones it appears you got some bad shells... id guess they fractured into dust like the...
