NC upland team headed to SD for the first time.

Speeding ticket in Sioux City via radar camera north side on I 29. The Illinois ticket was 20 years ago, I 57, and I was pulling my dog trailer, didn't notice that the speed limit was lower if you had a trailer in tow.

NC upland team headed to SD for the first time.

Shouldn't be too crowded mid Nov, still the further from town the better. Use sdgfp maps. Knock on some doors. Scout before 10. Waterproof boots for cattails!

    Pierre Steak Dinner

Awesome offer. I'll be in SD that week, but Huron is a little too far away. Good luck!!

    Beeper collar vs GPS

Exactly. I use the tone not as a recall, but I expect my dogs to turn back toward me at tone. Recall is dog name, "Here" or whistle. I can't hear the tone if I'm 10 feet away so it makes little sound. If they don't turn to where I can see them, I assume a point first and go toward the last...

    2021 Outlook

Good luck to all getting to enjoy the SD NR opener tomorrow. Leave a few birds for us arriving later in the season. Its 3 weeks before I make it to SD. Be safe and good shooting!

What gears a new hunter must have

Dog first aid kits -2. Small one I carry with me. Larger one in the truck. Phone numbers for local vets and emergency vet.

    Possession Limit

I agree. It would be important to have valid hunting license for the multiple states should - in what I think would be highly unlikely - that you were checked. I can't imagine a CO just randomly knocking on a door to check a freezer unless someone tipped them off. I think the possession limit...

    Emergency haying.

I'm with you. I don't hunt pheasants in order to feed my family. Its a recreation. Something I do for enjoyment. I have benefitted for decades from CRP,CREP and public hunting areas and so have pheasants. If the farmers are playing by the established rules and are EH to feed their livestock...

"SD IS ENJOYING INCREASED PHEASANT ABUNDANCE!" (blaze orange, all caps, large font, GFP website...)

sjohn has pretty much captured my thoughts and feelings. I think stopping the survey was a mistake that hopefully will be reversed if the backlash is anything like it seems to be, but as sjohn said it will not and has not ever made a difference in whether I go, where I go, or how many trips I...

    Visited SD…..

OK BB you hit a nerve, in this case a good one. Couldn't agree with you more. Almost 3 decades of trips to SD and I hadn't thought of the church reference but it is like a religion. Lots of chatter about droughts, bird numbers, surveys - all interesting read, but it doesn't really matter -- I'm...

    Rail road tracks

SD 2021 Hunting and Trapping Handbook spends almost a full page on hunting RR right of ways -- page 82. Memory tells me its pretty much the same as 2020. Interesting it seems to say some of the Mitchell to Rapid City MRC line is open to small game hunting from Hwy 83 to Kadoka, maybe 40 miles...

How long do you hunt your dogs?

As a NR, the quick answer is 5. Qualifying that answer a bit -- Last year hunted 3 trips to SD. My dogs typically run every day for 1-2 hours starting in June. Nov trip was 4 guys, 5 dogs, 4 were mine, one was 12. Weather was cool. 12 yo hunted every day, but several places I hunt are 30-45...

    2021 RINGNECK OUTLOOK

Completely agree. I've got no real issues with SDGFP or the cost of NR license. License cost is a lot like the cost of shells -- its bug dust compared to feeding 4 dogs all year, vet bills, 1100 miles each way - at least 3 times a year, 20-25 nights in a motel, wear and tear on a truck, 100 or...

Even better than without hearing protection. You will not miss a single word! That is very important - right?🤫
