    Lost Sportdog Transmitter

Just FYI. Was hunting in SD last week and when I got back to the truck discovered I had lost my 1875 transmitter. The lanyard had frayed where it connected to the transmitter. I checked my other 1875 and the lanyard was very frayed and would probably broken pretty soon. The way the lanyard...

What is the best pair of boots you ever owned for hunting pheasants?

I've always been an Irish Setter boot guy, but tried other brands over the years. Usually leaned toward better quality, with my arches didn't think cheap boots would be a good choice. This year bought a pair of Schnee's Evo Mid on a whim. When I got them I was disappointed at how stiff the sole...

    Late Season Advice/Conditions

Just got back. Crops are just about all in. Bird numbers are about average. Talked to several locals that were dealing with covid so be careful. If you work hard you will have enough opportunities to score. Don't trust the ice in sloughs to hold you.

I had never seen a PC that close to Huron. Only times I've gotten into them was 30 miles west of Huron. I'll try to make another trip in January if the weather cooperates.

    [Solved] Politics Removed From Forum

Thanks for sharing. My Dad enlisted in the Army 2 weeks before graduating from high school (as lots of guys did) and landed at Omaha Beach. He never talked about it. I'm sure my admiration for Eisenhower came from him.

    [Solved] Politics Removed From Forum

I'm of the same opinion you expressed. I was really disappointed at nature and lack of civility of the personal attack. If I want to discuss politics, Chevy vs. Ford, or college football why do it on a pheasant hunting forum? Whereas I enjoy good natured discussion and debate, that thread was...

One of my most memorable hunts...

Couldn't agree more about the dogs - probably a good thing they can't speak English. I do remember the easy misses much longer. I also don't need another rooster, but I still need to go after them. I did change and carry the A5 the next walk.

One of my most memorable hunts...

Just got back to TN from SD. First time I've ever hunted just me and 2 of my dogs, Weather was great, just right amount of wind. Almost no hunters around. First 2 days were really good - dogs did their thing and I shot better than normal so days were short. Third day was tough, dogs did great...

Hunted 4 days, comfortable temps. Still some ice but not cold enough to walk on. Not many hunters in the motel. Birds were starting to bunch up, several times a group of 6 or 7 together. Saw more birds when driving than I did in November. Plenty of opportunities to limit, even got a bonus...

Heading back to Huron Wed - 19 hr drive. I too hunted in the heat, 85 one day. There were 4 guys, 5 dogs. Hunting around Huron for 26 years. I was concerned as dry as its been scenting might be a problem. This will be my first time when its just me, my 3 Brits. If you don't mind me asking, you...

What makes one field better than another, and some general pheasant hunting thoughts/questions..

I'll second corn being extremely important. This year several farms I hunt had been forced to plant beans instead of the normal corn due to wet spring conditions. The cover and wood lots were basically the same as last year, but held much fewer birds.

    Wish I knew it then

All above good advice. Depends on size of your group but I like the smaller public areas that are most isolated with crops near by. They don't seem to get as much pounding. Look for the state corner signs as you drive. Not all public areas are on the SD map or app. OK that's 2.

    warm weather!!

Just got back from hunting my traditional (25 years) third week of the season in SD. Really tough conditions - saw temps as high as 84 not much breeze, cover generally very thick, lakes where I've never seen water and high ground dry and dusty. Maybe it was the conditions or going from single...

    Door knocking

He actually rarely hunted with us as he couldn't walk thru the heavy grass, but would block and pick us up at the end of section, bring us back so we could hunt the other side back into the wind. He and his wife were a hoot - mid 70s. Went into a barn with him once and there set a big Harley...

    Door knocking

That brought a smile and memories -- 1. "Faulty math..." Freshman a couple years ago - 33 years later? Well written. Got to pay attention when A5 talks. 2. Similar experience -- First trip to SD 1996 - not doing much good on public so we started knocking on doors. Elderly man answers, I make our...
