    Them Changes

Listened to a good podcast with a professor from Texas Tech on quail in Texas. One thing he stressed is that it isn’t just about habitat. You can have habitat and no birds. Its a complex issue. Farming practices, habitat, chemicals, parasites, predators, weather, etc… all play a part.

What wild game are you serving for the holiday?

Brined up some pheasant breasts and put them on the pellet smoker. First time I’ve done that. It will not be the last. I did go a little too long and they were not as juicy and I would have liked, but dang they were good.

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

I’m a landowner in a non-pheasant state. I have to travel to hunt pheasants. We have lots of ducks though. I’m proud of the efforts to create or maintain habitat for wildlife but it doesn’t make me any more aware of it or have some special feeling that means anything to anyone but me. I...

    20 guage auto?

I agree a nice shotgun should have walnut. I get these weird looks since I bought a Legacy with wood stock, a Browning Sweet Sixteen with wood. I hunt with a lot of guys that use the camo plastic. I’m just not a fan. I do have an A400 12 ga and an A300 20 ga with black plastic that I bought...

    Trulok choke tubes

Key quote at the end of the video. Depending on your factory choke….. The inv DS chokes have not had any good press. Lots of info out there on poor patterns. However, like you, I think its a good idea t check the stock chokes first. But I also have no issue with aftermarket chokes. I know...

    talk me into a gun

The other question is what % skeet and what % pheasant? I got my son a Browning Cynergy CX for trap and he wanted to take it pheasant hunting. That thing is like carrying a railroad tie around the pheasant fields. Great trap gun. I even like shooting it for trap. After 2 days of hunting he...

    Trulok choke tubes

I have the same gun. If you can, pattern the chokes that came with it first. That being said, many people have said the Inv. DS chokes in the sweet 16 are not very good. I didn’t like mine so I went with Briley solely for the color bands on them to make them easier to tell from all my Trulock...

If I could find one for the right price (read, that I can afford) I would love to have an Uggy.

Are you Break Open 2 barrel (O/U and SXS) or Autoloader guy

I really want a nice little 28 ga SxS for dove hunting. Just gotta find the right one I guess.

Are you Break Open 2 barrel (O/U and SXS) or Autoloader guy

All of the above. I have and hunt will all 3. I like the classicness of a SxS, I like the double trigger on my Marlin 90, and I probably shoot my Franchi 48 ALs the best.

    Boots , what ya like?

Hunted in some Salomon Quest boots this year and really liked them. Always wanted some Mendls but never bought any. I have some Irish Setters that I usually hunt in, but I’m having a plantar fasciitis flare and just couldn’t walk in them. The Salomons were good to go.

    Retirement gift for me!

When I retired from the USAF, mine was a Beretta Silver Pigeon in 20 and 28. Now my son is claiming it.

    How’s your shooting been?

I’m shooting a Briley choke in it.

    How’s your shooting been?

Not what I wanted with one gun. Good with another. I bought a Browning A5 Sweet Sixteen (new version) to take to SD. I also bought a Marlin Model 90 16 ga I planned to take. Shot the Marlin on day 1 and shot it well by the 2nd walk. Switched to the Browning on day 2. I hit a few, but...

    Beretta Silver Pigeon

I agree. I shoot my Franchi 48AL in 28 ga better than any other shotgun I own. I didn’t take it pheasant hunting this year but I’m tempted.i will try to take it on a preserve hunt.

    Gun wish list

I have the Ithaca 280 (SKB) in 20. It is a fun gun to hunt with. My uncle had one when I was a kid that he let me borrow for a quail hunt. I had wanted one ever since then. Finally picked one up My current wish list is three guns. #1 is a 1950s or 60s Browning Sweet 16. Looked at 3 at a...

    20 ga Wild Pheasant ammo?

I prefer 2 3/4” shells in #6. #5 is good too. I’ve killed birds with 3” and 2 3/4”. Shorter shells do it just fine. No need for 3” in my opinion. I typically shoot LM or M out of a Franchi 48 AL or Benelli Legacy. Shot some at a European hunt with my Ithaca (SKB) SxS. IC/M. That was fun

    20 guage auto?

After all this, I searched for comparisons. The Affinity3 gets lots of good press. Making me want to get my hands on one. My son is wanting my A300, so I may need a Franchi.
